When the LSU folks in the tech office were let go one part of that story stood out.

"..the university's reliance on an IBM mainframe that is no longer supported by IBM and must be repaired with parts found on eBay. It uses the outdated programming language of COBOL. The 43-year-old computer system handles LSU’s tuition, payrolls, student services and other critical functions."
My phone has more computing power than a 43 year-old system. What a metaphor for the leadership of F King Alexander.

Louisiana in a nutshell. Banana republic.

It's a common problem of many government systems. LA is not alone though that is probably way older.

Recall that every year during the Jinda; administration, the State support of LSU was cut. The cuts to LSU during that timeframe were greater than any other state university in the country. And LSU was funded substantially lower than the Southern average. Faculty were leaving and many, if not most, on this board said LSU has to learn to make do. So, do you keep faculty and fund scholarships or replace an old computer system? Out of state southern public universities were offering more in scholarship money to Louisiana students than LSU could.

How much did the LSU spending go down in those years regardless of source? The budget of LSU went UP each year save for 2012-2013 in the last several years. SO regardless of funding from one source the amount LSU was able to spend kept going UP. LSU spent $130 MILLION more in Jindal's last year in office than in his first. It is where leadership SPENT the money that is the largest problem. https://www.lsu.edu/bgtplan/trend/data/genexpend.pdf

Apparently, over 43 years, the fault lies with more than F King...

Indeed, our legacy reeks again.

Definitely. I remember that well. Public support of higher education went down a lot during the BJ years.

The gap between Jindal's expectations and accomplishments was greater than any governor in our history. Some governors you knew would be corrupt or incompetent. Most everybody thought Jindal was going to do great things. What a disappointment. At least he was exposed as a fraud before he made it to the White House.

+1000 Jindal was a zero whose only real accomplishment was to squander a billion dollar surplus he inherited from the previous administration with nothing to show for it. He left a total fiscal mess for the adults like JBE, Dardenne and Alario to clean up. And you're right - thank God he was exposed as an incompetent before he got the Republican nomination for President.

But that just means that with the fattest budgets the school ever had, and everything on the upswing, they still didn’t feel the need to upgrade with from a 35 year old system.
Jindal deserves a lot of hate for sone of what he did, but it’s simply absurd to try to pin the blame of this on him.

You been stewing on this for a minute huh?

Oh yeah, mainframe was like using an early form of DOS.

Lol...someone responded on Facebook to a post I made a while back and had me thinking about it.
And while Jindal failed,, LSU was spending 22% a year more the year he left office than the year he came in so it is a damned lie to say there was ever a cut in spending. No, the state should have not cut the flow of money to the flagship but leadership at LSU also should have been better stewards of the public largesse. The money just came from different places.

That’s not really uncommon. Every firm on the street still uses GMI for futures accounting. That’s well over 30.

This is easy! Increase fees to offset lack of spending. LSU is a privilege, not a right.

I think I read this in der Speigel two weeks ago.

Didn't know COBOL was still a thing in large scale enterprise settings.
