Kid grows like weed, which prevents him from putting on much muscle mass. Is there a right time to start building muscle? I've tried to feed him protein shakes, but it's too gritty...or he's too picky.

Bro, he's 11. He doesn't need to put on a bunch of mass. Give him a couple of more years before you start all that.

Just worry about good nutrition and functional strength.

I'm fine with whatever they want to do with him once he gets to Stannislaus, but they legitimately let these kids compete with JV (or even varsity, though that's a stupid long shot) high school boys upon arrival. He'll definitely be taller than some of the HS boys, he just needs some more mass to play contact sports. Would rather him keep track speed though.

Some mass. He'll likely bump up a year in club soccer this summer, so he's going to need it. He ends up bruised as hell after a 4 game weekend as is.

Pre-12 - All resistance training, yoga, cardio, calisthenics

12 - machine weight training, continue aforementioned.

15 - machine + free weights, continue aforementioned yoga and cardio

***yoga is so important. If you have never been an athlete or had one worth a damn, then you'll understand all the value.

I started working out with weights in eighth grade, and I hurt my back. Nothing debilitating or anything. I still workout and am healthy, but I have to visit a chiropractor occasionally. I would wait till at least 15 to hit weights. Body weight can do anything you need anyways.

I'd hate to be a kid now. Between having to know Mandarin Chinese and be involved with 5 charities by the time you're 12, you now have to work out like James Harrison?

Hard pass.

Don't forget taking all AP courses just to have a prayer of being in the top 25% of your class so you can get admitted to a Texas school.

And then having to take out a mortgage to get that degree.

Then starting pay at $40k with no benefits only to live in $2500/month closets in Compton, CA.

I think stannislaus has a middle school team. Let him play on age with his friends...he'll have more fun, and he'll get to actually play instead of sitting on the bench on the jv team.

He is too young for weights.

All we did in highschool was eat chicken leg quarters and drink whole milk like water.

Looking back, my poor mother caught hell keeping milk in the house.

If you're boy is white, sprints and fundamentals. He

He can start adding mass in two years.

Speed trumps everything.

Get him some parallel bars and a pullup bar. He'll be good to go.

As for legs? Lunges, sprinting, bulgarian squats, pistol squats (all bodyweight). You can get him a weighted vest when he's ready to take it up a notch.

This. get him a set of rings and parallel bars and if you can a true pullup bar.

Have him go on reddit bodyweight fitness and do the recommended routine. or if he has a phone let him download the bodyweight fitness pro app as that is the reddit routine. Have him progressively up the reps and work through the progressions listed on reddit. have him do that for the next 2 years.

have him become a bad arse at jump rope also. Hit develops the footwork.

outside of strength, athleticism is nothing more than moving your body through space and footwork. Calisthenics will teach him how to move and control his body through space, especially as he advances through the progressions. Jump rope will take care of the footwork, along with sport specific practice.

Also he does not need to do any weighted exercises yet, strictly bodyweight. Use the progressions to make it harder.

When he turns 13 put him on starting strength program or stronglifts program. stronglifts has a bad arse app he can follow along on. from there he can go to the greyskull lp or 531. I have a thread on the greyskull lp on the H&F board and you can download apps for 531. either of those would take him through HS.

dont do a gallon of milk no matter what unless you want him to get fat.

Get him up to 50 straight push-ups. 25 straight Pull-ups. 100 straight Sit ups. Soccer will take care of the running.

That's plenty in shape for whatever work out routine he walks into later.

btw i just gave you the exact template you can use to get your kid way ahead of the other kids when it comes to maximizing potential through training. don't do all that other stupid shite you were talking about.

Listen to me and sabi and HFP if he comes in this thread. Most of these guys are idiots of the OT. should have asked this on the H&F board.

I don't have access to a ton of stuff, everything I have is balance oriented. Did build him a campus wall in my foyer.

I'll get him a good jump rope and medicine balls. I'll go through all of the advice and set him up a Tue-Thur work out.
