I slap forgot about Volvo. I could get down with that, although maybe not modest enough.

I don’t want to attract any attention for what I drive.

She does not like driving and prefers to stay off the interstates. When she does, she is always in the right lane. Now she drives a small SUV.

But your initial assumptions had a 99% probability of being correct. Just not this time.

In what year and at what dealership did you walk out with a fully loaded outback for under 40?

Subaru Legacy is in the same general price-range as the Fusion.

Sedan - Check
Modest - Check
Spacious interior - Sorta...but it is slightly more spacious than the Fusion
AWD (a must) - Check
Good tech on the inside - Sorta
Nice looking on the outside (imo) - Sorta

I like my Mazda 6, not sure which trim comes with AWD.

Reasonably priced, solid performance, great gas mileage and stylish design.

The tech is middle of the road at best, interior on the 6 is very spacious.

Volvo is by no means a flashy brand. It's generic white people car - known for its safety. I can't think of anyone who ever drew attention to themselves in Volvo. Get a gray one, and blend in with the Accords and Camrys of the world.

I had a Hyundai Sonata hybrid when I was recruiting. Got 40+ mpg and was still peppy.

The new Altima is going to be offered in AWD for the 2.5L model, but not the 2.0T model yet.

If you don’t really need AWD:
Honda Accord
Chevy Malibu
VW Passat

If AWD is a must:
Buick Regal
Subaru Legacy

If those don’t do it for you, I would suggest a crossover like a Honda CR-V, Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore, or Subaru Forester.

You can also consider the Buick Regal TourX or Subaru Outback if you think an AWD wagon would work and like the styling. They both drive and handle like a sedan.

Acura’s SH-awd is superior to Subaru or VW.

Buick Regal is the best looking AWD sedan IMO. It’s a little more expensive than the Fusion, but it has a very good infotainment and handles well. The GS model is pretty fast and has the sport seats and brembo brakes.

The Buick Regal is built in Germany, so that may be an issue for the OP if he wanted an American built vehicle.

Don’t think VW sells AWD Passat or Jetta sedans anymore.

Honda, Chevy and Toyota would prefer that you buy a crossover if you want AWD.

Stupid IMO.
