When did "Passed Away" become "Passed"? And why?

Reading today's headlines about Carrie Fisher and it reminded me.... When did we start using "Passed" instead of "Passed Away"? Is there some social correctness associated with the term "Passed"? Is this an unintended spin-off effect of John Edwards?

I was at a formal sit down dinner with 12 people and we had this exact conversation. We thought passed was an AA expression.

I'm more curious as to why it bothers you, that it occupies your mind for longer than 5 seconds and that you felt the need to start a thread about it.

Passed away implies that a spirit or being is going away to another place

I received an email today from an employee that said his grandmother expired. I thought that was odd and cold, but got the message across.
