the most recent spike started late 1980's but people have been eating a lot of sugar for many decades. i would think as the country transitioned from rural communities to cities where it was more plentiful, easier to buy.

Not entirely true. How much does an egg cost? How about an apple? How about carrots? You can eat healthy cheap, it just takes time to prepare and people are lazy.

Honestly it has a lot to do imo with a/c, cable TV, and then the internet blowing up.

prob when the same people telling you to line up for a vaccine because you are all fat as frick said animal products are bad for you and America switched to processed carbs instead.

Youd be better off eating those eggs they say are bad for you then eating a bowl of sugar every morning like i did growing up.

Working in ICU I guess I started noticing it about 1995.Prior to that it was rare to get
a 300 lb. pt,if we did it was some guy 6’5” or so.We started getting an occasional 300 lb’er.After about 2000 they became fairly common to where we always had at least 1.About 2005 it really exploded,we would usually have a couple, started getting
400 lb’er,some pushing 500

One awful week we had 7 300-500 lb pts.Being a male I got to pull on or turn every one of them, several times a day.

Big part of why I retired early(60) is my shoulders were wrecked,I slept in lounge chair my last 2 years and probably 6 months after.
I was always very careful of my back and never injured it but I saw quite a few, especially males that ruined their backs.

Humans gravitate towards the easy and lazy. Given the chance to thrive with little to no activity, most humans would gladly take it.

The easier you make it for dysfunctional types, the more dysfunction you will get.

To be fair, there were a lot of other factors at play here. The message from mainstream education, entertainment, media, etc. is that a woman without a "career" is tragically oppressed. Some of those women working desk jobs don't give two shits about whether their kids go to private school.

Some truth to this. Food stamps sure didn't help.

Being able to buy coke and sugary drinks on food stamps doesnt help.

Decades ago poor folks used actual food stamps and many things were excluded.

Giving humans unlimited options is never a good idea. We all need tradeoffs and obstacles. Shaming and limiting items wasn't a bad thing.

Even at home when you worked in the yard it was more labor. Now people have riding mowers for the 1/4 acre plot, hire a maid to clean the house, and sit on their couch. Even country living isn’t near about what it use to be. Go to someone’s house out in the woods and kids are still staring at screens all day along mom and dad doing the same thing.

There was a thread here a few weeks ago where someone was complaining about not being allowed to use leaf blowers. It was mentioned that the alternative that had been suggested was using a rake or broom, and this was widely viewed here as preposterous .

Leaf blowers, elevators, drive-through food... I question why any of this shite even exists. It's clear we have a problem, and using internal combustion to move every damned thing to where it needs to be, from a leaf to a hamburger, is not helping.

When I watched the leader of the free world and BMI frontrunner scarfing down cokes and KFC while having his PCP label him the healthiest man alive, I accepted that this trend is irreversible.

Remember the fat-free cookies that were supposed to be healthy? Even as a kid, I could sense that was complete bull shite. You will literally die without fat in your diet, but that’s what the scientific community goes after. Then about 10 years ago we learn they were paid off to overemphasize the harms of fat, and overlook the harms of sugar, which anyone with a brain could tell is the real issue.

Snackwells was the brand, incidentally, they just discontinued this brand in 2022.

The first example was probably the push to replace breast milk with formula in the 1930s. Companies sold it as the healthier option. During that period the agriculture department started getting heavily involved in our food policy, to the detriment of our health.

If I remember correctly that’s about the time they started experimenting with the Red Delicious apple to make it more visually appealing, and to extend its shelf life. They would eventually ruin it.
