He let a young murderer plea to 15 years, with time served...
WTF RIcky Babin?

A Gonzales man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a shooting near the Donaldsonville High School football stadium, according to District Attorney Ricky Babin's office.
In 2023, Malik Fowler, now 24, drove a blue Mustang past the stadium and fired shots at two men, killing Tyree Parker and injuring the other.
Fowler pleaded guilty to manslaughter on June 16, 2025. Sentencing was deferred pending a pre-sentence investigation.
On April 21, he was given a 20-year sentence, with 15 years to be served in prison.
Upon release, Fowler is to be placed on 5 years of supervised probation. He was given credit for time served.

Technically, 20, and murder requires specific intent and manslaughter doesn't. We don't know if there was an angle with the evidence to make the risk:reward out of whack, too.

According to the district attorney’s office, Fowler was taken to the Ascension Parish Jail in connection with a fight that happened before the shooting, but he was ultimately charged in connection with the shooting.
Officials stated that video of the shooting showed Fowler in the driver’s seat of a Mustang when a man punched him through the driver’s side window.
The video then reportedly showed Fowler getting out of the vehicle and walking up to a crowd before firing multiple shots from a handgun, hitting Parker and another person, officials explained.
Looks like the shooter and the shootee were cousins and best friends.

If you had been in that courtroom, you would have seen two mothers holding hands and heard testimony from the people who actually knew them. We love Tyree and we love Malik. Before you label a young man you’ve never met, try to understand that this was a tragedy, not a crime of malice." his Mother Tomeraine Fowler

So what else would a drive-by shooter be intending to do besides commit murder?

Exactly. That's second-degree murder, and this hood rat trash murderer will be out in 11 years!

Oh yeah, the risk:reward was way out of whack for 2nd degree murder

I saw the video of this shooting, and there 100% is a murderer here. The man got out of his car, pointed the gun at someone, and pulled the trigger. 100% intentional, 100% murder.
Ricky Babin ought to be ashamed of himself and deserves 100% of the shite he's going to catch over this one.

Y'all do realize the conviction process isn't a unilateral decision by the DA, right? They have to get all 12 jurors to agree.
Showing the victim being the initial aggressor and his mother testifying on behalf of the Defendant would put any conviction at risk. It's still probably more likely than not, but by no means a sure thing, with all of that.

Ricky Babin has been DA for almost 20 years. Might be time for a change.

Making the state prove the facts of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt to 12 jurors?

That makes sense, however, cops who have shot/killed black men in self defense have gone to jail for worse things than this guy got convicted of, and he walked right up to the victim and shot him.
I'd think my DA should be capable of a better conviction than this one, but I wasn't in the courtroom.

The video shows the victim punching through the car window, and it also shows the threat to the shooter as being over with by the time he throws the car into park, walks out with a gun in his hand, points it at the guy, then pulls the trigger.
It doesn't matter that the victim was the initial aggressor. The threat he posed to the shooter was over with by the time the shooting occurred, yet the shooter still made the decision to get out of the car and shoot.

Did they have the victim's family support them during the process?

It's a balance of both risk:reward and the victim's family's wishes.

Where in the rule of law does it state that if a victim's family supports the aggressor, somehow the crime vanishes?
