It's a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. So its kinda like Arnold Schwarzzenegger Movies: Sure, he used to be big and when his name is attached to movies nowadays, you think, "Oh look, a Schwarzennegger action flick!"

Then you realize that everything he does nowadays is total crap...and you go about your business.

Basically every HS in EBRP is becoming some type of magnet. To be in the magnet program you must test in but that will make up 1/10 of the school. Also the way EBRPSD is set up anyone can go to any public HS it's their thing. Thank god I work for WBRPSD

From what I've read/heard, you do have to apply and get accepted, but you don't have to have a certain GPA or test scores to get in like BRMHS. Once in, I believe you have to MAINTAIN a 2.5, but it's not a requirement for initial acceptance.

Application also requires a letter of recommendation, a portfolio of work in one of the fields of study, and an interview. So you have to want to go there pretty bad to even bother with the application. This will weed out some of the students with apathetic parents.

From NOLA.com
quote:

Lee's new magnet program focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as digital arts and biomedical studies.

I think the students in the surrounding area/school proximity zone have priority admission. It is a "dedicated magnet school", which means just magnet kids will attend there.

Nanette McCann, the principal of BRMHS is also the principal of Lee--she splits time between the two. Here's an article about her with some info about Lee High as well: LINK.

Looks like current enrollment is less 400 as someone above noted, but they plan to add more students by the time it opens on the new campus.

The city would never dream of building a school that nice in St. George.

It's going to be a STEM Magnet, but the folks who live in the old Lee High district get first priority to attend. I think Dan Claitor (LHS '79) had a hand in getting this thing built. The folks in that area have a LOT of money, and wanted a decent public high school in the area. LHS had pretty much become a warehouse for foreigners and dysfuntionals before the school closed in 2009.

ETA: I wonder if they will allow Confederate flags at their soccer games.

Well that should be interesting. Will it be all Magnet, or have a GENPOP?

If your kid is going to public school in BR you should still send him to BRMHS assuming he can get it. The Asian kids aren't all that weird.

Will this be a public school w/ an optional magnet program (ex: Like Scottlandville)?

Or will it be a 100% dedicated magnet school (ex: like BR High)?

Lee will be a dedicated magnet high school with a STEM focus. It is partnering for dual enrollment with LSU. Students will have to apply to enter and maintain a 2.5 to stay. It will have 1200 students when the new school is complete.

Nanette McCann is over both BRMHS and Lee. She is assembling a high quality staff at Lee and some staff teach at both schools.

This year about 650 students qualified, based on GPA, for 450 9th grade spots at BRMHS. About 300 had preferences for Magnet middle or sibling. About 150 out of 350 got in who went to private or non-magnet middle schools.

When Lee is finished there will be 850 combined dedicated Magnet high school (including BRMHS) seats with about 450-500 seats available each year to students from private or non-magnet middle schools.

So BRMHS's 9th grade class will be 350 or 450? Any clue what Lee's will be this year? Didn't they accept applications during the second application period because they still had spots open?

9th grade class is about 450.

150 out of the 350 non magnet, non sibling students got in to BRMHS.

When the new Lee is complete next year they will take 400 9th graders.

I think Lee took between 150-200 this year. They did not do the 2nd app period. There is a wait list.

Lee high is expected to compete with BRMHS, and eventually outperform BRMHS-( Taylor) and the principal is also principal of brmhs .
It will be a STEM and art school, with great campus. private schools will have another competitor. It has black art kids now, but soon Asians and maybe whites will go there too

Ah, got it. I misread your earlier statement.

It's good to see so many spots opening up in both of those schools, but I wonder how that will affect the enrollment in GT programs at McKinley High & Woodlawn High. I know a couple of kids who opted for Lee instead of continuing on the gifted track.
