How can a cop prevent a crime, unless it happens in front of him?

Oh god damn. THIS is what happens when someone on the Internet gets one paragraph from a USSC decision and claims the sky is falling.

SCOTUS held that police don’t have a duty TO THE INDIVIDUAL to protect them. Police obviously exist to protect the public. If the courts held they had a duty TO EACH INDIVIDUAL then you would be able to sue them every single time you are the victim of a crime. That would obviously result in chaos.

In an egregious case, you can still sue them for negligence and that happens all the time. Police try to shoot a robber and accidentally shoot a bystander? Negligence. But the guy who was being robbed can’t sue the police because he got robbed. It doesn’t work like that.

So calm down there.

The 10 Deadliest Jobs: Deaths per 100,000 1. Logging workers: 128.8 2. Fishers and related fishing workers: 117 3. Aircraft pilot and flight engineers: 53.4 4. Roofers: 40.5 5. Structural iron and steel workers: 37 6. Refuse and recyclable material collectors: 27.1 7. Electrical power-line installers and repairers: 23 8. Drivers/sales workers and truck drivers: 22.1 9. Farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers: 21.3 10. Construction laborers: 17.4 Out of approximately one million police and law enforcement personnel, with 126 deaths per year, the death rate for police is 12.6 per hundred thousand. The most dangerous job in the U.S. is being president. Eight out of 44 presidents died in office, about 18 percent. Four were assassinated, just over 9 percent. Most policemen killed on the job die in accidents (mostly auto), not from firearm assault, according to the FBI. According to FBI figures (which are slightly different than other tabulations), 14 of the 76 police deaths in 2013, nation-wide, were due to auto accidents —- when the officer wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Tragic for sure. Of the 76 cops who died in the line of duty in 2013, 18 of them were from gunfire. The rest were traffic fatalities or slips and falls.

Is being a cop that dangerous? Lay their lives on the line??? Are you joking lol. I have had plenty of first hand experience with pos cops. Most recently a guy almost sideswiped me, chased me after I flipped him off, and when I finally pulled over he flashes his badge......His police volunteer badge. When I called to report his actions the police department wasn't helpful at all and said he'd be talked to lol, didn't even act alarmed really. It's different when you walk around town with an EMS shirt on 24/7

I'm not claiming the end of the world is coming you dramatic titty baby. It's just another stepping stone to further separate the public and the police.

was just trying to make sure there was a cause for him chasing me...You know so the story didn't go "the guy almost sideswiped me and just randomly started chasing me for no reason. Stop trying to bring people down and actually bring some intelligent thoughts from deep down inside that dome of yours

Police have a responsibility to protect the general public. They are not anyone's personal bodyguard.

I don’t know cops that run around saying “I put my life on the line for you” although obviously some are gonna do that, there is 100s of thousands of police officers, you are gonna have some that do that. I think the thing with police dealing with hazards is dealing with people, who are unpredictable, especially when pissed off. Machinery and equipment can be dangerous but there is usually safety standards to keep from people getting hurt, many workers around machinery also get hurt from being careless.

That piece of machinery isn’t actively trying to hurt someone, people will. So statistically being a police isn’t the most dangerous and many of their injuries and dangers go unreported, but the “what could happen” the unpredictable nature of the job, is still dangerous. Personally I’ve worked 2 police officers shot, one stabbed, and have witnessed many punched, spit on, scratched etc. Hell I’ve been spit on more than once in back of an ambulance with a patient with HIV or hepatitis, even clawed at, cops deal with that shite daily, crazy arse people.

I have no doubt it's not the greatest job....Maybe because of how shitty the job is, it gives them some entitlement over normal citizens because they deal with the worst people. THEY frickING SOUGHT THE JOB, TOOK IT, AND HAVE STAYED....The benefits must outweigh the negatives.

Whats the difference in protecting me and protecting the public? I am the public and so are you.....

Trust me, I'm not looking for cops to help me in anyway at all. There are people who do need their help and they don't get it. I think if a cop drops the ball and is found negligent, he or she should get double the penalty, automatic loss of badge, and never be able to work as a police officer again, I'm sure you know a lot of officers get fired and move to the next city to keep being a shite cop

You are the one that started a thread in ignorance and have pretty much proven you have the reading comprehension skills of the profoundly retarded. Police have no duty to protect individuals not in their custody. This is common sense but idiots like you, and the author of the article you cite, are too stupid to do independent research and exercise a minimal amount of critical thinking.

Why not? Shouldn't they as their job? Protect and Serve? Does that mean protect the badge? We as the public employee these cops, should we not also decide what they should be responsible for? Cops and accountability do not mix very well

We do, they are called laws and we elect the people responsible for making and amending them on our behalf.
