Seems like most sensible people looking for premium brands but Omega, Breitling, or Tags.

And you’d be wrong...

My old man bought one in Vienna in the early ‘80’s for around 5k. Had it appraised 5 years ago for insurance purposes. Came back at over $25000. He wore it every day until they told him that. Now it’s in a safe lol not getting robbed over it

n my experience, new Rolexes are part of the new money starter kit. They scream “look at me”. Seems like most sensible people looking for premium brands but Omega, Breitling, or Tags. Or really classy people buy vintage Rolex.

This. Have three. Great watches and I really like the way they look. Simple as that.

This thread made me want to buy a Rolex but apparently Target doesn’t carry them

I’d rather the cash.

I have a friend who has 2 $25k Rolex’s and just bought a Richard Mille McClaren for $190k. He is a sucker for watches, old cars(he has over 30), and guns. He is wealthy enough to buy that kind of stuff when he wants and claims the watches are investments. He gave me a nice Citizen Blue Angels watch and it’s the nicest one I own because he felt sorry for me wearing my Jack Mason $300 watch, LOL. I took it without batting an eye and wear that sucker almost everyday. Not sure about a guy who barely makes 6 figures buying one but the ultra wealthy buy stuff like that like I would buy a $250 pair of Johnston & Murphy’s.

Reminds me of my buddy who has 2 Honda Accords and a Lamborghini Huracan

That is actually a good price for an RM11-03 but he will have to watch the market closely if he doesn't want to get burned, assuming he doesn't want to keep it forever. The issue with the RMs is that the demand is a result of it being one of the current "it" watches for celebrities, particularly rappers and pro athletes and just like the many themed Audemars Piguet ROO Chronos when they are no longer the watch du jour the market will evaporate. It isn't like they are what most people see as a generational watch. The bi-color forged carbon on this particular watch is very interesting but I think the quality and pattern on my AP Carbon Diver is done better.

I agree. Just the fact it is a skeleton is enough to turn me off, I don't even like the classic open work watches from Vacheron Constantine and they are the king of openwork. That said they are a niche watch that some people like them (De gustibus non est disputandum) but I would much rather have a Patek grand complication for the money.

My $300-$400 tissot or sieko will look the same from a far. Seems like a waste to drop more than $500 on watch, especially in today’s age of cellphones and smart watches
The finer things in life aren't mean't to be understood or appreciated by the unwashed masses. There's an ocean of sophistication between you and the people who recognize the beauty and craftsmanship of these timepieces.

bought a 18038 Day Date at Mayor’s in Miami in 1979. They gave me a Daytona for free with that purchase and said nobody wanted them and it had been in the case forever.
A 1979 Daytona with red writing will bring $75-80 thousand today.

I’ve seen the 20-year award at my company. It’s a piece of clear acrylic with some nice words etched in it.
We call it an “acrylic bludgeoning device”.

When there’s patek philippe? I know what you mean

Man I like nice watches. But by nice, it’s usually based on how I think it look and if I recognize the brand.
I really like Citizen watches. I’ve owned 2 or 3 and they are my favorite. I know they aren’t “expensive” but they look nice. Got my eye on this one, right now, for an everyday watch.

I currently rock a Timex Weekender and have a microbrand watch on the way. The brand won't be recognizable to almost anyone but I love the features it offered at the particular pricepoint vs some larger names.
I saw this the other day. You have to appreciate the mechanics.

First box, second row, second from the right.
Mine gets zero wrist time.
Band is too tight or too loose.
