Dr. Randy Pausch

quote:

Pausch learned he had pancreatic cancer in September 2006. In August 2007, he was given a terminal diagnosis: "3 to 6 months of good health left". He gave an upbeat lecture titled "The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" on September 18, 2007, at Carnegie Mellon, which became a popular YouTube video and led to other media appearances. He then co-authored a book called The Last Lecture on the same theme, which became a New York Times best-seller.

Several good quotes, but one of my favorites when talking about obstacles in life:

quote:

The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.

Dick Hoyt died earlier this year. He was 80, and passed in March. Man was the epitome of a selfless father. The world misses you Mr Hoyt.

If that doesn't make you want to be a better father, nothing will.

Sitting in a coffee shop crying my eyes out with this video thinking about my kids (one special needs. thankfully not as severe as in the video), being a divorced father and my failures/successes as I do my level best to lead their development in all areas of their young lives.

I was out Saturday having drinks with a younger (~15yrs) single mother that I've dated off/on over the last 4 years and she was whining about her circumstance (father not participating at all in his daughter's life) and how sometimes she just can't/doesn't want to do it anymore. We were at the bar and I completely lost it on her. Tore her a new a-hole for her attitude.

Needless to say, I don't think we'll be going out again.

Video reminds me why I get up and do it again every day they're with me.

This is good, wished I had followed it. Unfortunately I'm in my 40s and a burned out paramedic with nowhere else to go. I should have done something else when I was younger. This is a good video to show teenagers and young adults.

Nonsense, you are young now. I was a wage slave for 32 years with a solid ceiling over my head. At 52 I took what capital I could get together and started a retail/repair business. I worked my arse off at promoting it and growing it, I sold it 8 years later with enough to retire on.

Invest in yourself.

Lou Holtz speaking at a college graduation a few years back.
The 22 year old me should have heard something like that and put some of the suggestions into action.
