Immersion for aural learners. If you are a visual learner, reading (start with simple children books and then moving up- for visual learners, you will likely become proficient in reading and writing, but never really become fluent in speaking, unless you start as a child. The worse thing US does is not start foreign language at elementary level. It would be even better to start it in preschool.

Go to the Defense Language Institute at Joint Airbase San Antonio.

I flew with a guy from Iraq that didn’t speak a word of English beforehand and his English is outstanding.

But, you might have to join the military first.

Move to the country where the la gauge is spoken

Interact with people as much as possible

Watch tv and listen to the radio

You’d be surprised how quickly you’ll learn if you make the effort

Force yourself to start thinking in those languages you are learning instead of trying to translate constantly.

You know how some people's Pops threw them in the deep end to teach them how to swim?

Well, what you need to do is similar. Pick an exotic land to visit (preferably one with lose drunkenness laws), get whichever party favor you prefer, but make sure it is more than enough. Then, commence to getting mindblowingly wasted to the point you forget your name.

This will make you revert to your animal instincts. It will speed up the evolutionary processes. You will be forced to learn the language to survive the predicament you have found yourself in. If you survive you will be 100% fluent.

Godspeed.

Using it right now for Spanish. It’s actually pretty good.

Wholeheartedly agree. Learning basic parts of a language, or school subject at a young age are crucial.

When I was in the 4th grade, they’d make all of us take a French class for the year. To this day, I can remember more French that I learned in that class, than I can Spanish, which I learned in high school. I don’t know if it was just our school, our school board, or if everyone in South LA did that at the time.
