Honestly? No. But neither of us had much experience as it's judged today. I WAS the shy one when we met... we were 15. She was, by her own admission, something of a Mean Girl at that point (and boy, did she revel in letting me know it at the time). Then I went into the service and it was my turn to be a bit of a jerk. And yes, it involved girls.

Neither of us had big notch counts... and yes, we discussed it. We married in 1991. After a brief period apart following the so-called 7 year itch... no sleeping around on either side... we reunited and have been together ever since.

So I've been on many parts of that coin... married young, had the itch to "be free", and realized how stupid and vain that itch really is. You're not "missing out on life" if you're not banging dozens of women (or men, for the ladies). And I've seen people that married young and stayed faithful for a lifetime, and I know people... women included... that got their educations, became professionals, married late in life, and still can't be faithful to their spouse if their life depended on it. And in the case of the ladies that I personally know on this... friends of my wife and I... they all had high, continuous notch counts as they "explored" and "found themselves" in college and afterwards, and basically never stopped sampling the buffet. One friend of ours I feel sorry for. Outwardly she has everything that's supposed to make an educated woman happy. She lives with a guy that's been very good to her, also a high earning professional, and they share a nice house together. But she'll never marry him. And the reason is that she doesn't want to give up the freedom of other men. Actually, I feel more sorry for her boyfriend. He very much gets the short end of the shaft here. He adores her. And she appreciates him. But she can never really bond with him completely. And that's because of all of her experiences. She's simply too addicted to the thrill of the occasional new guy. It's a kind of endorphin rush.

So, yes. Numbers DO matter.
