What's the longest time you've heard someone wait before naming their baby?

Buddy of mine and his wife had their 3rd kid this morning at 9 a.m. and still haven't decided on a name. It's almost almost 10 hours since they had him. Everybody is calling him John Doe.

Eta: they've known for months they were having a boy.

About 24 hours

I think you have to name them before you leave?

Picabo Street the olympic skier. They waited till she was 3 years old before naming her. Friend of mine grew up with the parents and said they were trailer trash.

You don't have to but the hospital tells you that. They file the paperwork necessary to get a baby certificate.

I don't think that's odd at all that they haven't named him after 10 hours. It may not be the norm these days but each to their own.

The social security number application should be set up before you leave. You kind of need a name to complete that task. And the birth certificate too for that matter.

Peekaboo Street, the skier, named herself. So, however old that was.

10 hours is no big deal, man.

I went to school with a guy that was never named. The hospital filled out the birth certificate as little boy "last name". Everyone just called him LB.

They aren't hippies. I just thought it was odd. Dude keeps sending out group text pics. No name.

3 days. We had thought girl for sure and had the name picked out, except she was a boy. Complications in the birth and immediately flown to an NICU in Wisconsin. I went there. This was 1 AM Sunday. We named him Tuesday night. We still have paperwork for Boy. I told the staff to call me Man.

That's a pretty good reason.

Scandinavians don't name their babies until they are christened, which can be over a year sometimes.

Sorry to hear about the NICU, been there too. That's rough to see your freshly born child in there.

Maybe they had a couple names in mind....but wanted to wait until the baby was born to see which name suited the baby more.

Not that odd really. Saw it several times when I was a mother/baby nurse.

For hospital records....baby is just Boy Smith or Girl Smith anyways. Even in the NICU for babies that have been there months....their id bands still say Girl Smith.

This is what we did for all three of our kids. I think it was at least a day before we finally decided on the keepers, but we did name them before we left the hospital.

FWIW, we didn't find out the sex of any of our kids before birth, but had a few boy & girl choices picked out already. We didn't let anyone know the real choices either until the baby was born, because inevitably someone will come up with something negative about whatever name you choose. They're just less likely to tell you your name was so-and-so's slutty ex-girlfriend's name after the baby is born.

The middle names seemed to be the hardest for us, even though all of their middle names were chosen to honor someone close.

My great aunt named herself when she was about three. Of course, she was close to the youngest of ten kids. My great grandmother was probably tired of thinking up names! They called her Baby until she named herself.
