What's the likelihood that my Lyft driver's sob story was fake?

Took a Lyft from the Marta station to home last night after flying back to ATL. The driver was a baw from Houma, LA who claimed that he was temporarily living in ATL because his daughter has cancer and is being treated at Emory.
He proceeded to dive into this sob story about how he had to quit his job in NOLA to move up here to be with his wife and daughter, but his son still lives in their Houma house and he has to pay the mortgage and bills. He said something to the effect of being short on the past month's electric bill by $63 and he has to work all night in order to make at least that much by morning. He apparently hadn't eaten in a couple of days and hasn't washed his clothes for a month. Also said that he has nowhere to sleep except for the room at the hospital.
I obviously felt sorry for the guy and tipped him $10 after completing the ride. However, the more I think about this, the more I realize the possibility could exist that he was making up or at least exaggerating part of his story, especially about the power bill, in order to coerce a bigger tip.
Am I wrong for being cynical about this or do I have a legitimate gripe here? People will lie about anything this day and age for a dollar and it seems interesting that he brought all of this up unsolicited.

Yeah, he had a legitimate South Louisiana dialect.

He figured out a way to make an extra $100 per night. He is banking it all and will have interest and dividend income of $1800 per week by the time he is 45.

sounds like you got suckered.
but look at it like this, though gullible, you are a generous person who meant well and tried to help another person out. the $10 wont change the way you live.

People from the bayou are real good at being victims and also have the worst luck.

You guys are some tough hearted Mo Fo's.
And if it was fake news, it only cost you $10. Not like it set you back a fortune.

If it was fake, that's on him. You did a nice thing. Don't worry about it.

Same likelihood that all of the strippers on Bourbon Street are either 1) at Delgado studying nursing or 2) at UNO studying elementary education

How old is the daughter?
The only way it could be legit is if she has a rare cancer, I know a guy through work with a stepdaughter that had a rare form of cancer, or it was rare in someone her age.
They could have went to St. Jude but was (iirc) pressured by Emory to take her there since they “have more research”.
You did the right thing by giving him 10.00 for his kid
If he lied then that’s on him & he will have to live with it

It's $10. If it'd been $100, then maybe I'd say you got played, but $10 is just a nice tip for a driver who happened to be from the same part of the world as you.
