Did he leave it running?

Calling the police over something like someone breaking into your car is as useless as a used condom.
And from me that thought just elicits

I've never reported a vehicle break in to insurance. I also won't bother with police in NOLA, I don't have 3-4 hours to waste waiting for a report that's as useful as toilet paper.

If you shoot someone in NOLA for breaking into your car, you'll probably go to prison and get sued by the perp's family
If he makes a move towards you when you catch him, shoot him. Otherwise, probably not worth it in the long run

If they don’t care for following the law , neither do I. Shoot, stab, beat them(not necessarily in that order). Then leave the body in the middle of the street as a warning to others.

Lock your door, problem solved
Just the opposite. When I lived in NO, if you locked your doors you got robbed and had to fix a window. Just leave it unlocked, but leave nothing in the car.

No, but the car is push-button start and will start if the key is within a 10 foot radius or something like that.
I think it died after the computer realized the key wasn't in proximity after the UY' stole it which is why they probably ran it into a ditch.

Sounds like he is dumb for not locking it. But I agree frick NOLA

I can't speak for the Castle Doctrine in Louisiana, but here in Kentucky they have to be a threat to your person at your building or dwelling. Just breaking into your car doesn't apply.
Now if you ask them to leave your property and they approach you with a firearm and you feel that your life is threatened, then you can take them out.

It’s a big problem in our Texas neighborhood. People leaving their cars unlocked are the target, but dammit if it doesn’t get me fired up to check my cameras and a couple times a month some crackhead is walking up my driveway at 3:00am checking if my truck door is locked then moving on to the next house.
I want to confront them, but I’m not willing to wait up until 3:00am every night until he comes back. I’ll just lock my door and forget about it. It does piss me off to no end tho.

Couple of well placed razor blades under the door handle before you go to bed ought to help with that a little bit

Then there's HIV infected blood all over the car.

Or I’d be the one to forget and slice my own hand up.

What part of New Orleans?

Exact nuances depend on the state, and I'm not a lawyer anyway. However, as a general rule if your life or the life of someone else isn't in immediate danger do not use a firearm, which is deadly force. It could lead to be a bad kill which could land you in jail for a good chunk of the rest of your life, and regardless could tie up a lot of time and money even if it is ruled in your favor. The safe play is to hang back, call 911, and keep an eye on the perp and your family.

In Texas, at night, with them facing you, blast away. Leave no witness to counter your testimony. Also be aware of any neighbors with cameras that can be used as evidence against you.

lock you home door and call the cops. let them handle it unless he attempts to enter your home and then you need to defend yourself. no sense in putting yourself into a potential gunfight and resulting legal issues if you can help it.
