The teacher blowing up on the way to space. I was in 2nd grade. Someone came in and informed my teacher. She started crying then went get a TV for the class to watch the coverage.

We pretended to watch while we had pencil fights.

Pearl Harbor - It shook the nation and we were suddenly at war and rationing began. I remember being terribly scared that they were coming to our farm.

A second one that I well remember was Armistice Day that signified the end of conflict in Europe. I recall on the radio the announcer telling how housewives were beating the bottoms our of their washtubs in the streets celebrating.

The Griner arrest for marijuana is fair and I have to applaud her for owning up to her mistake, but in my opinion 9-1/2 years is a little extreme. Hopefully she can appeal the sentencing, but I am not sure how the Russian judicial system works.
