If you trade in also consider the tax savings on the new car purchase.
If you sell yourself I believe you can do an in and out at the dealership to get the tax savings on your Mr new car purchase.

Is the tax savings based on the actual trade-in amount or is it based on the trade-in minus the payoff of the loan? The trade-in would likely make me upside down on the car I own by a few thousand.

CarMax has been pretty competitive and fair lately.
They were really low. Not anywhere near the range of kbb’s value.

Year, miles, trim, options, condition? KBB is really a bad way to estimate a cars value
Are you doing an honest assessment of the vehicle value? If your vehicle has 10,000+ miles, a lesser package, or is a different year then that 4-5k will definitely matter. The only thing you can compare is your exact vehicle within a 5-10k mile range that may be a different color. If the vehicles you are looking at aren't the exact same then you can't use it as a comparison.
Are you taking a median value from the price or are you only looking at what the higher end vehicles are going for? The 16k-18k makes it seem like the median value is 17k. But if there's also some going for 12k, 13k, and 14, then your value is skewed.

Carvana.
Easy peasy. Reasonable price. Onward.

Unless you have a good relationship with your dealer, a lot of them dont want to do in & outs anymore.
OP basically got offered 13K for his trade which wasnt a lowball offer.
He may be able to get 15K for it PP, but he'll earn it.

You are spot on. I guess the decision is whether $2000 is worth the extra effort.

I sold a bunch of old cars on craigslist. Always very easy. Usually first showing buys it. Just dumped the last one on carmax.

I would think if it's a southern car listing it in a national platform would be better. Salt belt will pay a little more for a rust free southern car.

KBB instant Cash Offer- it goes out the several dealerships in the area and they make you offers. That’s how I sold my last truck.

Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, eBay.

I sold my truck at Carmax about a year ago because they were the highest offer I found. The easiest experience I could have imagined. Fill out some very basic info online before you go, bring the quote to them, they "inspect" it, call you over and give you a check.
It took an hour at most, they were very friendly and helpful.

Facebook Marketplace, roadside with sign near busy intersection with permission from landowner, and believe it or not, social media like SnapChat and Nextdoor App. If you have a popular friend on Snapchat, the car info will spread rapidly.
Also, try parking it in the parking lot of a popular gym. Lots of people go in and out of the big gyms.

Facebook Marketplace. Just make sure you’re packing when you meet up to finalize the deal.
