I finally surrendered trying to drive them away from my outside garbage cans so now I just bribe them by putting a scoop of cheap dry dog food every evening at the back of my lot away from the house.

They eat that and I haven't had any trouble with them turning over by garbage cans since.

Coons will tear a dog up. Speed is a good attribute for a dog fighting a raccoon - my Aussie is very quick (kills copperheads) and hit the raccoon full speed. She has the coon down before it can get the claws on her (they like to try to rip the stomach).

ETA: My parents had one of the first Jack Russells in Texas (likely the first) back when no one knew what a Jack Russell was. He was short-legged and a good fighter. He had four or five coon kills, but each time he'd get pretty beat up.
