Its 10.

6 Squared is 36

36/6 = 6

6+4 = 10

This seems extremly easy for the OT.

Am I missing something?

You're missing the correct answer.

I thoroughly enjoy a good math thread on the OT. You'll usually get two different answers, and the people getting those answers are certain they're correct. Once the correct answer has been determined and proven, the incorrect group refuses to back down. It's a nice way to break up the monotony of the day.

I especially love the "it depends on how you interpret it!" responses.

one of these math problems pops up on the OT or facebook once a month, and the question is always similar- there is always a parenthesis in the equation which throws most people off.

You should first divide 36 by 2. You are multiplying the 2 by 3 first, which is wrong.

I thought Multiplication has priority over Division according to the 2010 Multiplication/division accord .

So dumb. This is like asking us to correctly interpret

".trailer chairs in put house movers the the the the from"

No mathematician worth his salt would write a problem in this manner.

Multiplication and division are the same process just the inverse (or reciprocal) of each other. Similarly, subtraction is ultimately the addition of a negative number.

I think we got a 42 somewhere in the thread. Does that say anything about that guy's intelligence?

42 wasn't a serious answer, it was a reference to "Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy"

So there is that.

Don't forget your towel.

ETA: beaten to it.

I have spent 10 minutes trying to figure out you get to 42 and I can't. It has to be a typo.

Explanation of all of the answers in this thread:

58 is the correct answer
10 is if you do not understand the order of operations
42 is a reference to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the answer is always 42)
350 is a reference to South Park (god damn, Loch Ness monster)
3.6 is probably some dude intentionally solving it wrong

Maybe, but no mathematician worth his salt would get an answer other than 58. It's not ambiguous.
