How does this go 9 pages?

It is pretty bad that people are struggling to solve this problem.

And after 9 pages of the right answer being explained you're still too stupid to realize that you got it wrong

It's 58.

The 2(3) is read as 2x3 bc there's no activity inside the parenthesis. So this just works left to right.

How the hell is this still a thread?

My 6th graders would laugh at this problem. BTW, PEMDAS is useless unless you explain that multiplication/division and the addition/subtraction occur by whichever appear first in the problem.

For the responses on the first few pages(all I read), 2(3) is not parenthetical, it just means 2 x 3.

Our school is moving away from PEMDAS and teaching GEMS instead. Kids get less confused.

I only posted in it after I read a few pages...then read the last few pages.

I guess it is still going because dozens of people are still answering 10 and then saying BOOM and doing touchdown dances, even when it is explained that the division comes before the multiplication.

It does not need any other context as some have suggested, only a 6th grade understanding of the order of operations.

I do not even use an acronym for it.

10 pages. This is an indictment on the intelligence level of the OT. The correct answer is 58 u tards. There's no meaningful parenthesis in this problem. Exponents, then work left to right

OneFifty, you are correct!

We were all taught incorrectly growing up.

58 is the correct answer

It's a question of does 2(3) constitute parentheses or a multiplication in pemdas. Because the parentheses isn't really performing a visibly parentheses role

It's not a question. If there's just a number inside then it's just multiplication

6^2/(2(3))+4=10
6^2/2(3)+4=58

Exactly.

Now how do we know that PEMDAS is the correct way to solve shite? Why can't another order be more correct? During school we learned this, but not sure if we learned why it is so. Maybe some math guru can explain, as I am asking for a friend.

Because (I assume) exponents are just repeated multiplication, and multiplication is repeated addition.

Reduce exponents to multiplication/division, then reduce all multiplication/division to addition/subtraction.

3+ 3^2 x3 would break down to 3+ (3x3) x3

3+ (3x3) x3 would break down to 3+ (3+3+3) x3 or
3+ 9 x3

3+ (3+3+3) x3 would break down to
3 + (3+3+3) + (3+3+3) + (3+3+3)

Which is just 3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3.

PEMDAS just reduces everything to addition/subtraction then works left to right.

How is the answer not being 288 a hint?
