What's Most Important To You In Your Career?

I'm at a loss OT. One of my best friends called me and presented his dilemma. Basically he got a job offer for more money, better benefits, more vacation. It would involve moving to a new place with better schools, better work/life balance for him and his family. But the catch is it would effectively be a career change working in an industry he's never been in before. He's worried he'd be throwing away experience.
At first glance I was like "What are you waiting for?" But he really likes what he does. Then I got to thinking about my own situation. If I was faced with the same scenario, is it worth the change and sacrificing the ground you've made in your field to do something different? Basically trading short term comfort for long term success? I know where I work now I'm topped out. I'll be doing this for the next 10 years because of the size of the company. There's nothing else for me to do. Unfortunately I've had to move around a lot because of the economy but I really like where I work now. This is the first place I've ever worked where I'd hesitate leaving.
This is a lot tougher than I initially thought it would be. What would the OT do?

I think if 10 years goes by and you've tapped out at your job, it's time to present yourself with some new challenges. The worst thing you can do is just get stale and ride the tide.

well, as I see it, the only thing that experience does for you is increase your pay, and if his new job puts him in at higher pay than what he is currently making, his experience is not really a part of the equation.
I would be concerned that the new offer is actually as good as it appears...once you change jobs, things are seldom as good as the picture that is painted before you accept.

A year ago I was in the same boat as you. I was topped out in my position and didn't see any potential for growth for the next 10-15 years. So I made the decision to start over in a different field. At 30, I figured it was either now or never. Although I took an initial pay cut, the position is way better than my previous. The people that I work with are great and most importantly, the room for growth over the next 30 years is there. I would tell your friend that you never know what it's like on the other side unless he tries it. Seems like it's a good thing from what you say. Just wouldn't burn any bridges in case it falls through and he needs to go back.

Yeah, you spend about 1/4 or more of your adult life at work, prone ably another 1/4 commuting/worrying about it. Might as well enjoy your work.

TL/DR version, make the most money while keeping the most free time to do the things I enjoy.
It's not called work because it's enjoyable.

Disposable Income > Where You Live
What good is living in a supposed fun place if you dont have the money to enjoy it

What's the use in having a few bucks if you're miserable with your surroundings?

I guess I should somewhat modify my answer. I'm sure that there is a price, but as a general rule, you can't pay me enough to move into the city.

I want to go to work, do my job, and then go home. They then pay me, and then I'm happy. That's it. I don't need to go to meetings, or hear that we're a family, team or any bullshite like that. For the most part, I like the people I work with, but they're not even close to being my family and I don't consider them my "team". Just stop with that stupid bullshite that's becoming so popular now.
So what's most important? Getting paid, and being left alone.

If you find a job you like doing, you will never work a day in your life.

Change can be scary. I changed 4 years ago and I'm not young. Best thing I ever did. I say go for it.
