These are disappearing at an alarming rate. Everybody keeps porch lights on and they need near total darkness to thrive. Also once they are no longer in an area that you used to see them in, they never return.

Do those things even sting? I mean that's what people called them but I never knew anyone that was stung by them.

I will never forget when I picked one of those boogers up as a little kid playing in my grandparent’s back yard. The pain was enough in my little hand to build a real hatred for those things.
They had a real infestation and put aluminum foil around the trees to keep them from eating them up.

We used to gently pick them up and let them crawl on us. You'd only get stung every once in a while

Last year, at my parents house, there were tons of them. Usually I had never seen more than a few, but there were dozens and dozens of them. Looked like something from a movie.

They used to thrive on the salt particles drifting in from large wave action along the gulf (especially Gulf Shores). Now that the waves aren’t big anymore the particles don’t drift as far inland and the stinging caterpillars can’t maintain their skin pH at levels they used to.

Those things HURT! I've stepped on too many of those barefoot in my younger days. I had one sting that hurt for a good two days and the marks it left behind lasted almost a month. Those little bastards are impressive.

One stung me last year. fricking middle finger swole up so fast I couldn't bend it anymore by the time I got in the house.

At my place the stinging caterpillars started to disappear when the geckos moved in. Geckos eat the buck moths that the stinging caterpillars turn into. We had a ton of geckos a few years ago. Hadn't seen a stinging caterpillar in about two years. Now the geckos are dwindling and sure enough, I saw a few stinging caterpillars this spring.

You have a point. Some springs, you would see them in masses. I haven’t seen one in maybe three years.
