Move this outdoor board if it’s supposed to be there. Growing up in South Louisiana, you used to see stinging caterpillars literally everywhere all the time in spring. Now though, I don’t think I’ve seen one in probably like 8 years. What happened to them all? It wouldn’t bother me if they went extinct.

Talking about these little bastards.

You just aren't spending 10 hours a day outside anymore.

Saw them a bunch on LSU's campus around 2015-2017. Haven't really seen any since.

I still see them around the house some but not like we did as kids. I remember we'd have a huge ball of like 50 of them on the backyard fence.

Maybe mosquito spray kills them?

Same with lightning bugs. I see them occasionally but we used to fill up Mason jars with them.

Yeah there definitely aren’t as many around as there used to be. They used to cover everything

Buck moth caterpillars have cycles. They were pretty bad a few years ago, and there was a record year in 2006. This year was very light. I only saw one or two.

Count your blessings and don’t spit into the wind.

I would say I still go outside a lot. My work frequently involves going outside near a wooded area that used to be swarming with them. Haven’t seen them there in a while. I also work on my yard a lot so I feel like I’d at least see a few.

Damn, I haven't seen any in the longest time. I figured the mosquito spray took them out too

Herbicides and pesticides. The quest for the perfect lawn. Landscaping with whatever in vogue non-native plants is popular that week...

Most caterpillars have a specific native host plant/plants that they can eat and thrive on. Without the host plant, no caterpillars, no moths/butterflies.

Whenever I do see them they are on the live oak in my backyard. It's pretty rare to see them anywhere else.

Did y'all used to squish them as kids and look at the yellow and green guts go everywhere? Or was that just me and my friends?

We have a handful around our house sometimes. We live in a fairly wooded area of BR.
