Honestly I’m about 99% sure you got played by the kid. Congrats on thinking emotionally like a female. Buying him one thing is cool when he has his own money but doing it all day and dealing with it sounds ridiculous and wasteful of your time. Reminds me of the moms growing up that we knew would pay for our stuff
See, where he screwed up is when he told me he had money.
If he would have played the sympathy card to start and given me a "gee willikers mister, I sure would like a banana, but I just don't have any dollars, shucks. My mom says we have to save money for her medicine."
I would have gone back and gotten that kid whatever banana he wanted. Probably would have spent whatever on him all day and not said a thing. Wouldn't even have realized the grift at all probably, and even then, whatever. It's 20 bucks.
But knowing I'm being grifted...that's a different story

You should write a 'song' about it.

But I don't understand how I'm the a-hole because I didn't just jump up and offer to get him expensive snacks just because he happened to get stuck with us
Wasn't the kid's fault he was stuck with an a-hole parent either.

If you go down to, the Audubon zoo,
Maybe bring, your dad with you ,
Cause if you do, his kids and crew,
Might have to eat some veggies too,
And If you've got cash,
Don't ask my arse,
For a frozen banana,
Cause I'll say lad,
Go ask your dad,
But he's at the cabana,
If you ain't got,
Cash for a lot,
Then it's not in your budget,
And if you do,
Then maybe you,
Should make your choice or fudge it.

You're right, I am an a-hole. An a-hole that knows that everything has a price and someone's got to pay it. And that in you try to scam vulnerable people, a bigger, meaner guy might come along and gently encourage you to pay up.

I say "no, I got these for my kids but you can get one if you have money."
To which he replies "I do but I want to save it for the gift shop."
Outside of offering to go up and help him spend his money wisely this would have ended any concerns for me.
No money or not enough money, and I might have helped.

Did I handle this poorly?
Yes, you were an a-hole. But outside of maybe making him pay the lady back, everything else can at least be chalked up to some sort of life lessons. The reimbursement was over the line IMO.
As for if the kid was playing you or not, there's not enough information to decide. But it seems like either answer is in play. If I felt like he was trying to play me, I would've been a bit of an a-hole but still helped him out (at least somewhat). If he seemed sincere, I likely would've helped him anyway and made it clear that I wasn't gonna buy him shite all day long.
It's not his fault he got stuck with a tightwad a-hole parent, just like it's not yours that you got stuck with a potentially grifting kid.
So I guess you're an a-hole, but not an egregious one.
And thanks for not rhyming your OP or making it into some stupid song.

You're better than this

Yeah, I can't believe the kid didn't want his carrots and celery to snack on.

Yep, OP screwed up by not including Kale. Everybody knows 11 year olds love Kale Chips...

I didn't FORCE him to. She brought a concern to me. I made change for the 20 in front the reptile house, and then gave him the money in the reptile house.
I wasn't even harsh, I was more suggestive.of "You should pay the lady, kid."
Because it was the right thing to do. If he had not have done that...well I wouldn't have came up with the difference in the gift shop. At least he didn't just steal it, just bad at math.

How old is the kid? To me, that's the most important variable. Not that you would owe him shite regardless, but in determining whether you were an a-hole about it
I love when your kidless arse gives advice like this.

Yea because everyone enjoys snacking on bell peppers

Do the little ones have seeds in them? I can't remember but it seems like you need to cut the stem off and the seeds out.

I didn't FORCE him to.
I mean, this is literally what you said:
quote:
She said "well he just came while I was buying my son something and said he needed me to buy this for him. I didn't know what to do so I did."
So I told her he had a 20 and i'd make change For them. Which is what I did. Because she had only brought so much cash. Like most other people there.
Then she gave him 3 back so he still had some cash for the gift shop. He would have had 10 bucks. Same as I told mine they could spend. )
I told him he was going to have to reimburse her. He had a $20, I took it and made change with it and gave him the balance. Gave the 13 to the lady and she even gave him $3 back.
He looked crestfallen but I told him that he was sent with a lunch, that I had snacks and he'd have to manage his money if he wanted to go to the gift shop.
Doesn't seem like he had much of a choice to me. Of course he looked crestfallen.

the mom got suckered and made a bad financial decision that he then felt the need to bully the kid cause he had a pre-existing grind against him for hustling out there at the zoo.
all the while he's a great dad cause he offered gluten free salad snack peppers with no ranch to the kids while everyone else dogging down frozen chocolate bananas.
