Interesting and very realistic questions posed by this thread but in this day and age if you think posting about blasting someone (even in valid self defense situations) on a message board won't get dug up in discovery in the subsequent court proceedings, in the event something was to happen probably isn't smart, even if its self-defense it will get spun negatively.
ETA: IRL if something awful like that were to occur in NOLA, or La, and you are still breathing call Dane Ciolino pronto.

Scenario #4. Never step foot in a 3rd world shithole

quote:This doesn't make sense because it assumes when a guy has a gun pointed at you that if you try to get your gun and shoot him that there's no chance you and your family will get shot. Again, that just doesn't add up.
So, I ask, are you willing to take that chance with you/your family’s lives at stake? I sure as hell am not.
quote:How are you arriving at this conclusion? Carjackings happen every single day without people getting shot every time.
Because I’m likely dead if I chose to surrender based on your referenced statistics or any misguided belief that the violent criminal won’t attempt to shoot me after holding me up at gunpoint and stealing my vehicle.

Get out and hand them my keys. There is a time to fight but that's not it. I'm not getting killed over a vehicle.
The thing that scares most people over this scenario is that the feral animals don’t fear consequences and will shoot you anyways. NOPD more than likely won’t even show up.

CCL holder here. I’m not shooting someone over my car. I feel like I’d spend more time talking to cops if I shot a kid than time spent replacing my car.

He will just keep doing it again and will eventually kill someone.
if it’s new you are going to be paying off that debt because your car isn’t worth what you paid.

I have been robbed at gunpoint at Bon Marche mall Way back when.
It’s a hell of a day easier to say oh I wish I did this or hear my friend say you should’ve done that. But when you’ve got two pistols pointed in your face, your body reacts a lot differently so I’m excited to see all the bad asses on here and what they think they would do

It gets easier after your first time.
I remember the first time some guy got in the car with me because I stupidly left the doors unlocked while my job took me into an iffy neighborhood. I calmly drove him away from the scene, told him I was cop and that I was dropping off a bait car in a different neighborhood. I asked him whether he wanted me to just drop him off or if he wanted to take this any further.
He said he just thought I wanted to buy something and his job was to show me. I pulled over and told him it sounded like we both should have studied harder in school and we’d better not see each other again.
I kept up my end of the deal and went to grad school. I studied harder and got a much higher paying job.

6 yr old honda is exactly what they want. parts are universal for chop shop ease or it blends in with every other car on the road so they can drive around until they dump it. This ain't Nic Cage stealing lambos to ship out the country

If your life is no longer in danger you lose some legal recourse to shoot
If at anytime they are armed then the legal recourse to shoot is valid. Even if they put the gun down there's nothing guaranteeing they can't pick it right back up. Numerous carjackers have been shot and killed in the driver seat of the vehicle by owners who turn the tables.

I guess there's always that chance but I think it's probably more likely that they shoot at you if you try to get away.

The best studies have consistently shown that people that use force to resist generally fair better outcomes than those that don't.

You got any links? I'd like to read those.

A different issue is whether defensive uses of guns, however numerous or rare they may be, are effective in preventing injury to the gun-wielding crime victim. Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was “used” by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies (Kleck, 1988; Kleck and DeLone, 1993; Southwick, 2000; Tark and Kleck, 2004). Effectiveness of defensive tactics, however, is likely to vary across types of victims, types of offenders, and circumstances of the crime, so further research is needed both to explore these contingencies and to confirm or discount earlier findings.

If this happened in the city where I work I would almost certainly recognize the carjacker as one of the kids I work with.

Give him the dummy fob (no key, push button start) Run and take cover. Unload on his arse when he realizes he can't go anywhere and steps out the vehicle to come after me.
