A) Take a position with a startup in a hot industry, making less annually, but get in at ground floor and receive stock/dividends in said company

or

B) Take a higher level, higher salary position at a well-regarded firm

Salary different approximately 60% more at B.

C: Go back to school so you don't have to choose between pyramid scheme and assistant manager at Burger King.

If I believe in the product and the company and can see it scaling up into a giant, I'm going A all the way.

Otherwise, B is a no brainier.

Am I under 35? Do I have kids? How much debt do I owe?

Your question is impossible to answer in a vacuum.

Wait until A takes off, then initiate hostile takeover, while benching 400 and banging OT 9's

Which one will provide more opportunity to move up to a higher paying job?
If "A" does not work out, will you be able to get a job similar to "B" within a reasonable time?

When you are 80 years old which one will you regret not taking?

As long as you know that people will lie to you and the biggest liars in business are start-up companies, you should be able to decide what to do with these opportunities and make a good decision.

A few went with Apple at start-up. Many more went with companies that had bad business plans, took on too much, made awful decisions at the top that killed any chance at success, were undercapitalized and went under.

Business is very tough. even well established mature companies fail, just not nearly as often as start-ups.

Everyone wants to say, I was there in the office at my desk on Apple's first day of business. There are many more who almost cry when they say I was there on ----'s first day of business and I could have been at a desk in R&D at Dow Chemical.

I thought a little about this a while back, and I decided that while Big Boys Drive-In is the hot new start-up, the Sonic further down Hospital Road has roller blades and the chance to watch some knuckles get checked. Easy choice.

A startup can be an exciting opportunity if you're relatively young, but you also should weigh that most startups are run by people who lack the experience and resources to ultimately be successful. For every Facebook, there are hundreds of guys who end up out of business or bankrupt.
