What would need to happen for NOLA to return to the city it once was in the 60's and 70's?

When my dad and his siblings grew up in NOLA East, the city was a thriving port and center of industry. Ever since the 80's, it has been on a steady decline, and things seemed to have rapidly deteriorated this decade in particular.

Could NOLA rebound with the right leadership? A mayor who is tough on crime? Gentrification? Or is it beyond hope?

The decline of the city was worth it for the Superbowl win.

Reverse the flight from Orleans to Jefferson.

How you accomplish that is a whole other kettle of fish.

As long as the state is ran by lawyers it won’t ever be like that. A lot easier/cheaper for companies to do business in Houston.

It won't happen. It may see a rise again in the future, but it will never be the same post Katrina. Everyone wants to go back (including me), but the reality is we have to pick up here and move forward whether we like it or not. This goes for the while country, not just NOLA.

This really isn’t true.

At this point, it’s main industry is tourism, which is not a great economy to rely on. However, it’s a top 5 (maybe top 10) city in the country in terms of tourism which is impressive going up against the likes SF, NYC, etc.

There has been a ton of investment in the past 10 years. Property values have skyrocketed.

Now if they ever want to turn the corner, quit electing horrible politicians. From top to bottom city officiating and administration is laughable.

If the duties for a position in city government can be easily done by one person, you know NOLA divvies that up into several positions.

In 1960 New Orleans’ demographics were 63% white and 37% black.

But really, New Orleans is still majority white today if you count the metro area. It’s just that in the 60’s more white people lived within the city limits. Now they live in the surrounding suburbs.

Elect much better leadership, which would require a significant number of a certain demographic to realize that democrats have done nothing beneficial for them.

Two thoughts on this:

1) Stop thinking of just the city of New Orleans. We don't do this with other places. The Woodlands and Sugar Land and the refineries southeast of Houston are important parts of their area. It's not Dallas, it's the MetroPlex. etc.

And if you look at the entire Metro area... it's the best it's been in a long, long time. Investments are being made, buildings built (and most of them make it to the end of construction), housing is booming, tourism is booming, companies are growing.

2) Metro Houston has more people than the entire State of LA. We are never going to compete with that. It is what it is.

The metro area continues to improve by investing in education and crime prevention. Companies don't want to move here / grow here if their mid-level managers need to pay for schooling.

The ports here are transitioning from the old breakbulk stuff to containers. They are continuing to grow this business. The tariffs aren't helping, sadly.

NOLA will always have a strong tourism beat, but the future growth is in port trade and resillance. The Water Campus stuff in BR is getting great attention and doing great things. We should be a hub for the world's experts when it comes to water geology and how we live with it.
