What would be a more significant event in the history of mankind?

Finding ruins, tools, and other artifacts on the martian surface and below the surface that strongly resemble human structures (pyramids for example) here on earth, along with cave paintings depicting beings that look exactly like us, but failing to find life on the red planet
OR
making contact with complex, somewhat humanoid beings (think "the grays), who upon close inspection are discovered not to be carbon-based in their biochemical makeup.
ETA: please don't get caught up with the title question. Basically, which of the two scenarios would be more significant in the long run in how we think, know about things.

This. No question. It would answer whether the being alone question.
It would either mean any one of 3 things....
1.) The end of the world as any civilization capable of traveling across space in big masses can squash us like we squash ants with our shoes.
2.) Humanity has progressed to an incredible point that we can travel in space and outside of our own system and maybe galaxy.
3.) The aliens are like American world police and coming to bring us some freedom and technology.

Discovering that oxygen is not required to sustain life elsewhere in the universe would be pretty shattering to the scientific community.

The Most significant, and potentially detrimental to mankind, would be option 2.
The most gee wiz would be option 1. What's happened to the beings? Were they dropped off there by aliens and didn't make? Did our government have manned travel to Mars covertly? Are they humans from another string or reality where/when travel to Mars by humans is commonplace and was suddenly halted.
Maybe Mars did have an atmosphere that supported human or carbon life but it was blown away by a Quasar but didn't affect earth.
This is one time where I'd like to see real, serious answers instead of the bullshite we often times post here.
