This might have been the only schoolyard game I didn't like. I thought it was boring and only the fat kids seemed to play it.
its because they didnt have to chase the ball down

4 square with bobbling and tree topping.
Damn, just writing that brought back a flood of memories from 4th grade.

Capture the flag
Not really schoolyard, but when we were like preteen age I remember some epic, multi-hour capture the flag games in the woods, usually in darkness.
That was good shite

This. We called it burn ball.

Loved Four Square. We'd have a line of kids waiting to get into the dungeon (4th box), and we'd spend whole recesses just rotating.

From kindergarten until about 4th grade my sole focus was kickball during recess.

Wall Ball. You throw a tennis ball against a wall, when it bounces back towards you, if it touches anyone, that person must run and touch the wall before someone throws the ball against the wall.
An absolutely perfect game.
I'll also say that we got a tetherball pole in middle school, and that thing was fun as hell.

Spent countless days at Nicholls St. baseball games playing this against the dugout.
Tackle the man with the football and good ole freeze tag.
We played a basketball game called tips, one team shot 3 pointers around the world while the other team would try to put back the rebounds but couldn't be touching the ground while touching the ball. Played a metric shite ton of that all the way to high school

Another good one is knockout with a basketball. 2 balls & you shoot from the free throw line. If you miss, grab the rebound and make a quick layup. If the guy behind you makes his shot before yours goes in, you're out. Simple and you can have a ton of people playing

We were all about kickball, tetherball and.....
Kiss Chase. We (the boys) we were always able to influence the girls so that the format was always...girls chase the boys. Copped a feel every chance I got!

Kickball followed closely by football which quickly turned into free for all/every man for himself......so, some vicious form of rugby

Red Rover.
Your future reputation was always on the line.
And if you went to a catholic school, that followed you into high school too.

We used to bring a football out and hit kids on purpose , 3 points for a face shot, 1 point for a body shot and 5 points for a nut shot. Good times
