I was the Combined Federal Campaign rep for my squadron, so I was in a meeting for that. I turned off my cellphone because I didn't want to get yelled at by my 1st Sgt. for having my phone on. I had no idea for like an hour what was going on. Tried to get back on base in the GOV that didn't have a working radio. I thought we were in an exercise until I got to the gate. Made it in the clinic between the towers falling.

We had to process around 1,100 people to deploy, to somewhere we didn't know. A bunch of them went to Bangor, Maine and sat for 3 weeks before being sent back to Kansas.

The next day was spent outside our building because a bomb threat had been called into 17 buildings on base and the SFS didn't have enough personnel to cover the gate, flightline, and clear the buildings in a timely manner. The reserves had not made it to the base yet. What a beginning to a surreal few years.

This was a fixed drydock... giant covered building. The sub pulled in, they closed the drydock gate and drained the basin. So the sub is sitting on blocks... there's an elevator that goes down to the bottom of the basin and that's what I was guarding. They had sent all the other subs out to sea but we had so much stuff removed that we couldn't leave.

Why is the bottom of the sub Red?

Is that the Red October?

I was about to go into my Civ Pro class, but stopped by the student break room. Everyone was watching the news as they tried to figure out why the first plane had hit the towers. Then saw the second plane hit the other tower. Professor called us into class for a few minutes to discuss what was happening and then sent everyone home.

Because it's cheaper than black... so they only use the good stuff above the waterline where you can see it.

Really though it's the same as regular ships... anti-fouling. Supposed to help keep barnacles and shite from growing on the hull.

easier to see when she rolls

seriously though, its just extra rust proofing...That part of the boat is under more than the top 1/4

Would have been a lot cooler if you said the Hunt for the Red October was finally over.

Just got in my car to make a down and back business trip from Shreveport to Baton Rouge. Ten minutes into the drive the radio broadcast was interrupted so I listened to the whole thing unfold on radio. It’s a totally different experience when you have to listen to a description and see it in your minds eye.

I was on Active Duty as an Army Officer and we began to mobilize for war right after the second airplane hit the tower.

I concluded then and passed the word around the command that the USA was under "armed attack" and was at war from that point in time.

I was living in Sydney at the time, so it was about 10:30 at night when it all began. I had just gone to bed and fallen asleep. My wife was still awake and woke me up when the news broke about the first plane hitting. I just assumed it was a little Cessna and rolled over to go back to sleep. Then I hear my brother-in-law yelling and cussing in the living room; that is when the second plane had hit. So my arse was good and awake at this point. We had Fox News over there, and Sky News Australia picked up the CNN feed, so we were switching between the two. I called my folks in Louisiana and we talked for a bit as things occurred. I went back to bed at 3am after Bush gave his remarks at Barksdale AFB because I still had to leave for work at 6am. On the train into work, everyone had their nose in the newspapers and no one was saying a thing. Had the tv on all day at work. Co-workers kind of left me alone that day, being the only American in the place. I guess they didn't know what to do or say to me. My office block was in Bankstown, a predominantly Muslim suburb of Sydney. The streets were pretty empty for about a week after the attacks; I guess they were too afraid to be out in the open.

In my dorm at college. Roommate comes in and says we are under attack. I turn the tv on and watch for about 30 minutes and then leave for class.

Was stationed at Barksdale, we were in a base wide exercise with loaded B-52s. Will never forget looking up and seeing Air Force One circling.

you know whats neat? One of the Air Force Ones is at Shreveport regional. I believe it still is. IDK why but for the longest time one was kept there. I would always see it in an hanger when we flew out of there. I guess because it was close to barskdale.

there werent b52. There were f18s and f16s all over the sky. I was across the river from there. it was really weird seeing them all screaming across the skys. It calmed down after AF1 left and we realized bush was just there. but they still had a couple roaming around that day.

Rockwell used to have an avionics facility there, while those 74s looked like AF1, they were actually airborne command posts in there for maintenance
