What was the country’s reaction to the 1993 Waco siege when that was going on?

I was in first grade when that happened and I didn’t know anything about it until the Oklahoma City bombing. I remember when that happened and seeing everything on the news how terrible it was, especially, the daycare being hit in the building. I just saw the new Netflix documentary Waco American Apocalypse and I was thinking what was the country’s reaction to the 1993 Waco compound shootout with the stand-off until the compound burned down with the people still inside?

There was no social media or citizen journalism back then to have an open dialogue so the country bought the narratives fed to them by the MSM which was they were a cult and terrorist.

Around the same time as all of this was happening, I can remember "Militias" in places like Michigan being a really hot topic on the news.
Between this and Ruby Ridge, it seemed like the govt was turning on it's citizens. But it was before internet/social media, so it's hard to get a read on what the entire country was feeling.
On a personal level, I was disgusted and outraged. Still am. Those kids didn't have to die.

Yep. The government screwed the pooch on that one.

For most people old enough to remember it well the Branch Davidians is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear anything about Waco.

This. Nobody was happy about it but most of us assumed Koresh really was some sort of monster doing wicked things with kids. How would we know any different when all we got was the blurb on the evening news?

Eh, unless you live in Texas. Waco is just Waco, where Baylor lives.

I vaguely remember watching it. The OKC bombing was the one that really stands out for me but I was living in OKC at the time too so it was a huge huge deal.

People didn't know much of the truth until afterwards.
As it occurred, most just accepted the gubment reasoning.

Or the cult being led by Chip and Joanna Gaines. Needs more shiplap.

I was about 18 when that took place and watched it unfold on TV. It was a complete cluster frick by the Feds who got a bunch of innocent children killed. If your interested, do some research on Ruby Ridge. That'll piss you off even more.

Boomers took the MSM bait hook line and sinker. They loved watching the extreme government overreach

I was too young to really understand what was going on but I remember this older guy I was on a bus ride with going on a huge rant about the government’s mishandling of it. The guy was usually quiet and to himself but he was full on ranting about it.

Government agencies fumbled the operation and it got people/kids killed AND Koresh was a diabolical cult leader/pedophile actively ruining people’s lives.

Oklahoma City
Horrible that happened.
McVeigh regretted it in my opinion.
Especially, the kids.
He sped up his execution. I think it was in 01'? Which is crazy fast for government death penalty.
The government really pushed him to do a horrible thing. In the absence of ruby ridge and Waco, Oklahoma City doesn't happen.

Don't know about the country since this all happened pre-internet, social media, etc.
I watched some of it going down on TV as it was aired live at times and when those Feds were climbing all over the roof and got shot up I knew the shite was really going to hit the fan.
The Feds didn't have to try to breach that place with all those people inside. That whole place was isolated and surrounded so those people inside the compound were not going anywhere.
They could have simply waited them out in a siege tactic. They would have eventually run out of necessities and become forced to negotiate a surrender.

not in my community, I was in the DFW area while that was going on, it unfolded on TV and it didn't pass the smell test(no pun,) even then, it appeared to be a heavy handed, over armed(against its own citizens,) provocative action, on a side note, the winds were strong from the south for several days and the smoke was blown up to the DFW area, you could smell it, and it was on the DFW ATIS for several days

I went to basic in January 1994 in San Antonio. Decided to be cute and show up with my headbanger long hair. First TI that saw me when we got off the bus rushed me at 104mph. Stopped a quarter-inch from my face and screamed,"I THOUGHT WE GOT RID OF YOU AT WACO!"
Still best burn ever laid on me.

It was the first news I ever saw on the internet.
