For power tools?

A drill, circular saw, and sawzall are essential IMO.

Table saw and miter saw are nice to haves = what I borrow from my father-in-law.

Should a man own:
Drill
Impact driver
Air Compressor
Basic hand tools (socket set, screwdrivers, channellocks, etc)

Like Clint Eastwood said in Gran Torino: "Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone."

Nope. A good screw gun, hand saw, hammer, ratchet set, box end wrenches, screwdrivers, and a few pairs of pliers will fix almost anything around the house.

The rest, just make friends with your neighbors and borrow.

Nah. Most men don't even know carpentry let's be honest. A drill, circular saw, socket, screwdriver and wench set covers a lot of basic stuff

But if you flip the blade on the circular saw you can cut the frick out of tin. I like that.

Is a miter saw and table saw high on the list?
Not for a lot of men unless that is a regular hobby for them. Those are tools that take up a lot of room as well.

I've had them in the past but when I got kind of bored with woodworking I got rid of them. Have been on a welding kick lately and have accumulated tons of metal working tools.

That being said, the SO said she found some bookshelves she loves and asked if I could make and has also asked if I can build her a craft table. Now I'm going to go buy some more of the bigger woodworking tools that I got rid of before. I still have the router and smaller tools like that though. But also don't consider those the staples of tools men should own.

Mitre saw is awesome. I recommend getting one with a slide such as this compound mitre saw

I wouldn't buy a mitre saw that wasn't compound.

Not only should a man own these but he should know how to use them
1. Socket set
2. Hammer
3. Drill and basic bits that go along with it
4. chain saw

I purchased all three in this order:

Miter
Table
Circular

I use the circular saw 3x as much as I do the other two combined. While I used the other two extensively for certain projects, I could have completed most of those with using a circular saw as well.

ETA: When purchasing a Miter Saw, make sure you get one that extends outward toward you for extra cutting depth. If not, you won't be able to saw through anything greater than 6" wide.

I always make sure that every time my wife has a "Honey-Do" project there is a tool needed I don't have to justify buying it. Has worked for years.

Plus a circular saw takes up a lot less space, if that is a concern.

That said, just bought a new house and finally have room for a bit of shop... compound miter saw is next.

I guess a planer is out of the question then.
I built stuff for a while without having a planer and thought it wasn't necessary.

While I still agree it isn't necessary, it makes a world of difference when building something nice. If you've ever built anything without one and then something with one, you know what I mean.
