Before you knock that option too much, consider that if your choices are the dog's nostril or butthole, one of those is a lot closer to its mouth than the other.

1) Attacking a person - I do carry concealed, so if it's a true life or death situation I'll pull and possibly fire if I can get a shot off. I've been debating carrying a non-lethal (pepper spray, hornet spray, or something similar) for this sort of situation. Rather fight a possible negligent situation than a wrongful death.
2) My dog - Get involved and see above.
3) Someone else's Dog - Spray water or non-lethal, I won't pull or shoot unless a human is involved.

One suggestion was to jam your thumb/finger up its nose
seems like a great way to lose a hand
i'd shoot the pit if i had my pistol near
i guess maybe pick it up by its hind legs and slam it into a tree or something

I will share what I know from raising Pits back in the 70's.
I too had a few pits back in the 70's and you're spot on about keeping and knowing how to use a break stick.
I only had to use a break stick twice in the years I had pits, but they are very effective if you know how to use one.
I was living in the lower 9th and one day walking my 50 lb. male pit that I got out of Maurice Carver stock and that damn dog was all hips, chest and had a head like an old dial-up telephone.
I'm walking back home on St. Claude near Alabo with the dog on a 10 ft. leash and passing a mechanics shop when out of nowhere a big German Shepherd comes tearing across the lot. My dog spotted it and before I could say anything, they clashed and my pit got hold of the Shepherd's head.
The black guys running the shop ran out and I heard one of them say "Our dogs attacking that man's dog, help me get him off". When he gets to where I am he sees his dog getting the worst of it and I tell him I'll get my dog off but he needed to grab his dog by the ears, pull the dog away when I get my dogs jaws released and not let him go before that so it could bite me.
He did as I suggested and I broke out a hickory break stick I had made, got my pits mouth open and that shepherd took off so fast the other way the old man was left holding 2 handfuls of hair. He started laughing his arse off and said "Guess that's the last time that dog will do that shite".
I had my last pit up to 95 and she was the only dog that ever was an inside dog. I had to put her down over the Easter weekend that year when she was riddled with cancer at only 8 years old.

Always have a knife in my pocket..
There's not a creature on this planet that won't bleed out if you cut its throat.
If something doesn't want you cut it's throat, it's a damned difficult thing to do, especially with a short pocket knife without slicing yourself all up in the process.
Grab his nuts pull and cut those and get tf outta the way, because the mouth is coming your way, but he isn't going to be a threat.

It won't! I've seen pits get there guts cut out and not let go of 350lb boar hog. So no

This is the only way to get one off of someone or something. Break stick or anything to pry the mouth open

It's this weird thing I see in the edc/self defense realm. Everyone wants a nasty arse knife that can do a ton of damage, but nobody wants to train with said knife so they only do damage to the "other guy", if that's even possible. A boxing/jujitsu schedule of classes >>>>>>> buying a nasty looking self defense knife.

Leaving to go get a weapon is not an option.
And we’re trying to teach you that your choice is the wrong one. You will start freaking out when you’re connecting your muscular leg with its face and it only clamps down harder. Your dog will scream and howl every time you kick the pit bull.
There’s a reason they’re terrifying and dangerous dogs. A golden retriever can get its arse beat if it bites something. Pit bulls have killed grown adults.
Shove your fist into its a-hole and start twisting. You’ll have no other option if you’re unarmed.

treat that animal the same exact way that Vincent Vega treated Marvin in Pulp Fiction.

You can shoot it. Assuming it's legal for you to be carrying, you'll never get in a lick of trouble for shooting a dog while it is chewing on a person.
The only reason I carry is dogs. Since I've had kids, I've become much more aware of how many big arse dogs are around with unqualified owners.

Just kill it. I always carry a knife. I would not hesitate to bleed it out

Spraying water doesn’t work people. Jesus Christ

Kick it in the ribs until you puncture a lung... Unless you have a long blade or a short barrel.

I've tried to cut a not dead deers throat before. Two people and a dog and a deer that was shot in the guts and it was still a rodeo. We're lucky we didn't kill ourselves.
The only advantage with a pit is it likely isn't going to let go. Since the dangerous part is already busy, you can likely get close and get a safe shot on it if the victim isn't flailing around everywhere.
Or if you dont have a gun, cut its nuts off or gut it. Neither one is going to immediately incapacitate it, but it won't take long.

Someone mentioned pepper spray. Does that even work against a pit?
Me, I'm gonna just shoot the bastard.

They sell small batons that are supposed to work like stun guns or cattle prods. My dog is a lover not a fighter ... I always wonder about a random attack on her while we are out walking.
I was thinking about getting one of the stun gun batons just to take with us when we walk. Does anybody know if they work well enough to stop an attack by a PB or other big dog?

If only all the rest of them were dead as well

If you can hit it in the head hard enought to bust his skull it'll work. Otherwise, no.

It would be awesome if we just euthanized every single pit and didn't have to deal with these discussions at all.
"What if this breed that pops off at random and is really popular among poor and uneducated people that won't train them attacks me? Also, their jaws essentially lock down on whatever it bites and they can rarely be calmed down by anything that isn't hot lead".
