Idk how to tell you, but you are flat out wrong. They are all over our property I see them every day. This is a Fox Squirrel in Florida.
I find it hard to believe that yalls fox squirrels would be that much different from the ones we have in Louisiana. These mfers were all in my neighborhood growing up... Even raised two of them Merle and Earl. They look like this- from google image "fox squirrel"... That humongous fricking thing does not Look like this

Upon further review, it could possibly be a monkey squirrel or Sherman's fox squirrel (offshoot of a regular fox squirrel)
Sciurus niger shermani = Monkey squirrel/Sherman's
Sciurus niger= fox squirrel

Is there really a type of squirrel known as a monkey squirrel? Yes, there is a type of squirrel known as a monkey squirrel. This is the name people have given to this native type of fox squirrel of the state of Florida. It is not technically its real name. Also, not many other people outside of Florida know of this strange squirrel.

The pic I posted on page 3 is what we call fox squirrels down here. That is what is in OP. It's a fox squirrel.
I guess we have different fox squirrels than y'all because the pic you posted looks just like a regular grey squirrel with fox colors. Our fox squirrels are big sumbitches

Definitely NOT in the rat family. I would tend to believe it's some sort of carnivore, maybe a non-native species of viverrid or mustelid.

There is no size perception of those poles on the dock. They could be 8 inches tall.

How tall is that pole it's standing on. That might answer a few questions related to size.

Its perfectly fine for a pet. Capture it and bring it inside and let the kids play with it.
