Out of the major sports, golf. It isn’t easy by any means, but guys like Fowler, kissner, JT, Smylie Kaufman etc couldn’t have a shot in holy hell at any other sport

Due to it’s nature (no running, no conditioning, size not mattering) jts “easier” than the other major sports. Still not easy by any means

Another is cornhole

This seems like more of a skill than a sport. What qualifies as a sport? We talking things you can be drunk while playing and be at the top of your game like darts, pool and corn hole? Or are we talking about something that requires a moderate level of physical exertion and reactions.

I am going out on a limb and guessing there was a considerable amount of alcohol and/or THC being consumed during these debates.

Because golf by far is the “easiest”

John Smoltz, while being a pro baseball player, flew to Augusta and shot a 77. That would have him playing right with the pros. That isn’t him practicing everyday and training for golf. He is literally pro in something else

That can’t happen in any other sport in the world. Imagine taking JT or Rickie in the middle of the golf career and putting them in an nfl game. Or nba game. Or tennis match. Or hockey game. Etc. They wouldn’t be on the same planet

When someone is born, golf is their “best”chance to be pro in. It takes the least amount of variables to become pro

People think golf is the hardest because so many really really unauthentic or completely out of shape old men play it. The see these gross slobs at 30 handicaps and they say “see how impossible it is”. Meanwhile, those gross old men couldn’t even play another sport in their current condition.

what's your handicap? If it's not below a zero, you're not going pro

and that's from the back tees

Dude, I’m not going pro in any sport

At which level matters. If you're a massive person it's easy to excel at football, or if you're really tall basketball, at the high school levels.

I've seen some absolutely terrible basketball players at 6-10. There's even college athletes.

But being 6’10” isn’t “easy”. Only 0.000001% of people do it

That's not "taking it easy" and I got as far as I could. If I play someone that has no idea what they're doing I'll crush them. If I played McEnroe at his his peak I'd get crushed.

Yet requires no effort on the part of the individual. It's an immutable characteristic.

Yes, but you still have to have the astronomical odds to be that tall. It isn’t easy

Look major sports as based on what gets discussed here:

Football
Basketball
Baseball
Hockey
Golf
Tennis
Soccer

You are going to get 10,000 American newborns that represent Americas genetic and societal diversity. You get to pick one sport to train full time all these kids in and the goal is to make as many pros as possible. I think you are insane if you don’t choose golf. It’s the sport that’s going to give you the best odds by a lot IMHO

Physically, maybe so. You do need time, money and a good coach for golf, though, and not everyone has that either.

Some people are at a disadvantage in terms of access instead of physical ability. A Wayne Gretzky clone born in rural Alabama will likely never even hold a hockey stick

I still believe the men’s 100 meter dash at the Olympics is the world’s most difficult sport (or event) to win for a few reasons:

1) It’s highly genetic. 99.99% of the world is ruled out at birth.

2) Talent is very easy to spot (a grade school teacher watching her students play kickball can notice a fast kid) and few people with sub 10 second potential will slip through the cracks. Fast people are easy to see and tons of people (namely coaches) are looking for them.

3) Sprinting talent is relatively easy to develop compared to other sports. A poor kid in Africa can at least run with nothing but some shoes, clothes, and flat ground.

If a Usain Bolt clone were born in any random place in the world to a random family, his odds of being an Olympian in 20-25 years are good. Almost certain in the United States or some other developed country. His speed would definitely be noticed and developed and the only question is if he gravitated to another sport. But Usain Bolt = very fast person would be known.

If a Michael Phelps, Wayne Gretzky, Tiger Woods, or Dale Earnhardt clone were born into a random family somewhere in the world, the odds are slim (to very, very slim) that their talent would be recognized and they would get enough development to be professionals.

This is correct. One of golf’s biggest variables is social class and money

not even close, and yea i didn't lose many service games

They fricking measured my serve once and that was the speed. 145 is not that impressive

165 now that would be impressive

The question was “easiest to excel in.” I am interpreting that much differently than “become a professional athlete in.” I agree with your argument on becoming a pro athlete.

I suppose it depends on how you interpret it. But I would say excel would mean being considered a good player by your peers.

“That guy is a hell of a basketball player.”

“That dude is a stick on the golf course.”

It’s harder to be the stick.
