What sort of kick backs to corporations get from United Way?

I've worked for two different companies that pushed United Way down your throught so bad almost to the point of me questioning the legality in which they do so feeling forced to donate by a portion of your check going there every pay period. They have to get some sort if benefit or kick back from it to be so pushy about it. So what is it?

Although I am still in school, I deal with charities on a weekly basis now.
Someone that is in the corporate ladder very soon will probably be able to tell you exactly.
Many companies have adopted social responsibility, so it may be in your contract that to work for this company you must involve yourself, and this may be the choice.
Also I am sure just like in personal life, corporate businesses might be getting a break tax wise, and instead of taking it out of profits/revenue directly, just simply pushing the costs on the workers.
But be sure, with a "companies", they put somewhere in the contract language they could do this. They would not just risk it over indiscriminate charitable giving.

No kickbacks. It's just that your company (like many) want a sense of giving back to the community and United Way is easy and generic. Donations given to them get passed onto many other charities (minus an administration fee), mostly at United Way's choice. It is easy because then the company has to deal with only one charity (versus having to choose from an endless list of choices and then deal with employee complaints about whatever they chose).
United Way is good people but I prefer to work directly with the charities to see a more direct impact of our time/efforts and so that the charity gets 100% of the funds.

I think your company should be OK with you going and physicaly support them by investing your time and labor if you dont want to go the money route.

Governments push this down their employee's throats as well. Was working for s client in SLED and their big boss was highly encouraging people to donate and implied it was tracked. Deduct box, almost.

UW stresses to companies not to make employees feel pressured to give. But there are awards given to companies that meet goals for participation levels. I think it is the PR the companies are looking for.
Also, each local UW's determine which charities get the donations. Our receptionist is on the committee that makes the decisions. They visit each organization and attend a board meeting of the group and review their financial statements to determine if the donations are being used as they say they are going to be used. After talking to her about the due diligence they do, I felt much stronger about giving.

Don't know if it is still the case, but when I was an officer in the Marines the Combined Federal Campaign was mandatory. Woe be it to any commander whose unit did not participate at 100%.

I worked at Fed Ex in college. They did this as well. They'd have a big rally on a Friday night... had to come in an hour and a half early. They they'd give a splashy presentation and pass out cards with your "expected" payroll deduction amount. I checked the "0" box every year. Didn't like United Way then and don't like them now. If you want to support a charity, give your money to St. Jude.

If the company meets or beats it's goals, somebody from that company is going to Hawaii. My Brother in Law and his wife went when the company owners wife fell ill a few days before they were scheduled to leave. His trip was 10 days.

That's not paid for by UW. At least not on the BR area. They don't do that sort of rewards.

I think it's more like 55 cents on the dollar. Pathetic, nonetheless. Charities like Red Cross are above 90 cents on the dollar. My company supports UW. I chose not to participate.

It's the same where I work. I'm not sure if the company gets anything or not, but I wouldn't be surprised. What is known is that a considerable portion (~20%) of the donation goes towards administrative and fundraising expenses. I prefer to donate directly to a charity that receives 100% of the donation instead of a "middle man" taking a cut.
