My childhood home was about 1500sq ft and a family of 5. My dad was a white collar employee for a large regional construction company. That size home was fairly typical for the middle class in the 80s.

4850ft2 Family of 4. We have a kids office downstairs where boys do their homework which is best idea. Man loft over the garage. Master & guest bedroom on main so when adult friends visit they aren’t upstairs with my hooligans

I didn't build it, but I bought a 4,360 sf house for my family of 5. Plan to convert some attic space into a movie room soon though that will get me to about 4,600sf.

I had a 4,000 sq ft house and ended up buying a 2700 sq ft house.
4000 is way too much in my opinion. You end up with way too much crap in your house.
