What should I look for in a vinyl record player?

For Christmas I want to get my wife one of these. She loves old-fashioned items like this and she’s a fan of old music like Sinatra, Elle Fitzgerald, etc. that would probably sound good on one of these.

I checked Amazon. A lot of the vinyl players have all these other functions where you can convert your vinyls to MP3, hook it up to Bluetooth, etc. I don’t care about any of that, I just want it to play the records and I want what will sound most authentic. But I know nothing about vinyl records or players so I come to the all knowing OT.

Try to find one that works without turning the whole table.

Quality is in the diamond tip needle you will be dragging through the groove. Look for a Belt system and a way to control the speed. Getting these qualities can help the longevity of the vinyl and maintenance of the turn table a breeze.

Check out AudioTechnica. They make quality turntables for people just getting in to vinyl and for audiophiles as well.

The music board has a long thread on this with lots of good suggestions if you have more than a Crosley budget.

I bought my son a Uturn for his birthday. I think it was the plus version. He loves it.

I bought a Genesis turn table with direct drive. I've had it for years. Still runs like the day I unpackaged it. I like the direct gear drive over belts. The thing about belt drives is the belt will dry out, and either slip, or break over time. I had them do both. Especially when it goes unused for long periods of time. Get one that will last.

Ask in the audiophiles thread on the Music Board. You’ll get very good info there and they’ll fit your budget.

ETA: The Uturn suggestion is a very good one.

I have a working Magnavox record cabinet I'm thinking of getting rid of. I have 2. I just wanted them to work because I love the records and the furniture aspect.
