I think you’re trying to justify it. If losing alcohol you think would be totally detrimental to your own life by losing it, then you might have an issue.

Like physically losing it? That would be a huge blow. It’s the focal point of my house. I’ve built several pieces to hang and display my glassware. I collect cool decanters and i’m Most at home behind my bar, entertaining.

Plus it’s a serious investment. I’ve got thousands of dollars in wine alone and some of those are increasing in value nicely.

Then i’ve Got a substantial amount of limited edition single malts. I’ve got bottles going back to the 2000s.

It was getting my bar in order that really got my life in order. Helped to declutter my house and really make it somewhere I wanted to be.

So losing it would be a bit devastating I think. Because there’s an aspect of my personality that’s tied to drinking.

But I happen to like that aspect of me. I don’t get violent when I drink. I get happier. More relaxed, more creative.

My bills all get paid. My life is in order. I’ve got a job.

But the first thing I do when I have guests is step behind the bar and offer them a drink. And if I couldn’t do that I do think I’d feel a little empty

Is that a steroid or amphetamine? I looked it up, and those are the only things remotely concerning this conversation that makes sense.

Got it. Sorry, I’m a bit touchy on this issue.

If it's all under control and in moderation then I see no problem with it.

It's all fun and games until it's not. That's my experience anyway.

That is in the eye of the beholder. My grandfather was fricking brilliant and taught at Harvard (my one bit of the inheritance was his Harvard chair). He drank like a fish and smoked like a chimney while he taught class. He was never late or anything like that, but was unquestionably a huge alcoholic. He later taught at Ole Miss, and anyone who was taught by him have told me he was a great teacher that didn’t let those interfere with his teaching but clearly had a problem. I barely knew him, but everyone who has described him to me I have assessed he was a Tywin Lannister with a drinking problem.

I think that’s what concerns me. Because I have everything at my disposal to go on the bender to end all benders. A veritable liquor store. Although I supposed it’s no different than having an Arsenal and not using it either.

The potential for a negative does not equal that negative if one is the master of one’s ship.

I suppose we all have the potential for terrible acts.

Anyone with the gumption could go down to the gas station and get enough liquor to drink themselves to death.

It’s only our personal restraint that keeps us on an even keel.

I agree completely. I reached a point 3 months ago where I was just done with it. Stepped back and honestly assessed the benefits versus the costs. I have no desire pick it back up. My physical and mental health is worth more to me now and it was being impacted.
