Because there’s an aspect of my personality that’s tied to drinking.
Alcoholism was one of the better things to happen to me, in a way. Outside of all the bad things it caused, the person I became on this side of getting sober was much different. The brain rewired, fired in different neural circuits. I can remember life before but it killed my ego, buried my anxiety, opened my eyes to beauty again. Life slowed down.
It's still happening, 10 years sober and still transforming but the rut, socially and culturally flipped. I'm more patient, understanding, caring. Appreciative, grateful, positive..

I’m cutting back a bit on the beer especially, because of the extra calories. I really like heavy dark beers. Stouts and porters and dopplebocks, abbey ales, scotch ales.
And those calories just packed on the pounds. So I’ve got to lose weight for the sake of my back and health.
It’s really just about portion control. Holding myself to 1 instead of 6 or something. Because of my tolerance and genetics I can drink all damn night and still be fine. So that’s the biggest issue to address.

Agreed. Wouldn't change a thing.

I didn't really understand the level of anxiety I was carrying around due to alcohol until I stopped. There wasn't any huge event or bad thing that happened I just realized it was time to ask myself why I was even doing it. The list of benefits from alcohol was a very short list compared to the costs.

Out of curiosity, how long to “feel” those changes in real time? Like working out, 21 days in or so and you feel stronger?

Is it bad that I don’t want to change, for the most part?
My dad is an alcoholic. Been sober over 20 something years now, and i’m Glad for that for him...but he’s just an a-hole. He traded work for drink. Insufferable to be around, hyper critical...and i was too young to remember much but I remember him being fun when he was drinking. And he’s lost a lot but I don’t want to be that grump. Only time I see him happy is when he has the grand babies.
What if I don’t want to lose the joy I get from sharing a drink with someone?
I never got to share a beer with my dad. Some day I want to be able to take my son hunting, let him get his first kill, share his first beer with him.
Am I wrong for that? For wanting to teach him moderation? Because teetotalers just bother me with their sanctimoniousness.
Am I looking at it wrong?

About the 2 to 3 week mark. First 2 weeks weren't fun. Anxiety high and sleep was terrible. It got better and now I sleep incredibly well and feel awesome.

Nah, not really. I can't speak for you but most folks quit when it starts affecting their lifestyle
Alcoholics quit not because they want to, but when they have to.
I've known people who drank more than I ver did and lived a perfectly functional life
For me, it knocked me off the rails.

Okay...that makes me feel a little bit better.
I mean, i’ve Seen first hand the damage it can do and ruin people’s lives.
and then I look at me and wonder why I seem to be able to handle it now.
There was a time where it was becoming an issue, but then I made adjustments.
Plus I just enjoy it.
I guess I kind of feel bad sometimes when I see People who just get completely wasted and no one wants to be around them...and then I can have a full bar and not even get drunk.
I don’t know if it’s a virtue or a vice

How many drinks per week? What do you suppose it's doing your liver?
Posted on 1/8/19 at 11:58 pm to Jake88
Making it stronger? Some nights none. Some nights 4-5. Some nights just 1 or 2.
I’m a sipper, not a shooter, for the most part

Sipping vs shooting makes no difference when considering impacts on the liver. The amount consumed is the issue. Moderate drinking is considered 14 drinks per week for men. Take the Michigan alcohol screening test and answer honestly to get an idea as to whether you might have an issue.

That’s probably about right, give or take. During football season definitely higher.

You’re telling me if I sip on whiskey and water all night it’s no different than if I pound it all back in an hour? Serious question

quote:Yes, when it comes to your liver. Six ounces of bourbon whether shot over an hour or sipped on for four is still six ounces that has to be metabolized by the liver. Of course you'll be drunker quicker with the shots.

I took the test. No apparent problem. So that feels a little better. But i’m Sure I could stand to cut back some, just for the calories

Huh. I would have thought that a slow intake would be a lot easier than all at once.
Like the difference between slowly accelerating an engine versus stomping on the gas.

Did you click yes on the guilt? I sense a bit of it, hence why I suggested the MAST. Not a big deal. I get why you're in to your setup. It's like a hobby with the aging wines and such. I get to wondering what moderate drinking does to me over the decades, so I worry a bit like you.

I only feel guilty that I don’t feel bad about it...if that make sense.
Like...with all the shite that’s happened to me, family history, and access to alcohol...you’d think I should have a serious problem.
But other than my early to mid 20s (did most of my heavy binge drinking then. The depression drinking in a less than fulfilling marriage) I haven’t really had an issue.
I try to drink a lot of water when I drink to avoid the dehydration. And other than gameday, I just get to the point I want to and then stop.
