There’s an article out there written a few years ago that basically explains it.
Fleet operators like LE and taxi companies have switched to SUVs due to the majority of other models being designed with uni-bodies.
In the Crown Victoria era, they could repair a damaged model by swapping the hood and fender. That same damage on a uni-body all but totals it.

State boys all have Tahoes. SO is a mix. City is mostly croon vics still.

Its all they buy in my town. Im fine with it. So many people drive trucks/SUV's in the south.

I live in Montana. Every local police unit and sheriff’s department that I can think of uses Explorers, Tahoes or various trucks exclusively. Montana State University PD used to have a couple Crown Vics but they finally phased those out a year or two ago. They use Explorers now.
Montana Highway Patrol uses Explorers, AWD Tauruses and AWD Chargers.

In five years the city of Baton Rouge will have no 100% internal combustion engines in their fleet. So if it's not at least hybrid it won't be around.

Nearly all of them are SUVs in NOLA - but that's probably a good thing considering how shitty the streets are here.

I think they stopped making the Impala PPV recently - only civilian Impalas for another yet, then canceling that. Pushing more of the police market to the Tahoe.
Ford is pushing them towards the Explorer now that the Taurus is canceled.

I been wondering about the LSP. I have not spotted a Troop A or B vehicle that isn't the White Tahoe except for one Black Unmarked Dodge from Troop A and one from Troop B who seem to do nothing but write tickets on I-10 daily.
Troop A Douchey Dodge posts up between 22 and 61 on I-10.
And Troop B Douchey Dodge sits on the East Bound beginning of the Spillway.
But on topic EVERY other LSP vehicle I've seen is a Tahoe. Wasteful as frick except for K-9s, Traffic incident, and crime scene vehicles.

They stopped making Crown Vics in 2011, so I’m sure the maintenance costs are already, or soon will be, outweighed by the price of new vehicles.

At least NOPD is somewhat being fiscally responsible by using the Explorer instead of Tahoe. The price difference is $15k+ for the Tahoe.

It seems like most of the JPSO lives on the Northshore and drives a Ford Explorer.

Do you have some prices you could quote? And when someone says "high maintenance," they're usually referring to something being unreliable, which doesn't describe a Tahoe at all.

I don't have any prices handy. But I drove a Honda Accord, Toyota Corolla, and a Sequoia. The oil and filter size is a no brainer but I also remember the rotors being bigger and more expensive as were the pads. Tires can go either way if you have them low profile sport tires on a sedan. But generally 15"rims Tires will be cheaper than SUV tires.
