I would have to guess over 60% in the LP. All big new Tahoes. What is the purpose of those for law enforcement? They're big, slow, expensive and high maintenance. How those ever got to be a tool for law enforcement is beyond my comprehension.

Anyhow, How many are in your area?

I'd say around 90%, but I also live near the mountains.

County and "city" are almost all Explorers. County has one Charger and a Caprice. So over 90%

FCP lives in the LP. He believes there are way more than 60% LPSO deputies driving around in SUVs. Probably 80% SUVs, 10% motorcycles, and 10% Crown Vics.

Gotta put that civil asset forfeiture money to good use.

I was being generous but I would gather it's more than even 80.

it is a status symbol among LE, the higher the rank the more expensive the vehicle, so of course the LEOs that are actually patrolling and might actually have use for a SUV never get them and those that just drive back and forth from the house to the office have them

and of course there is the need for a Tahoe to pull your boat to Toledo bend?

Only the most tenured cops get the Tahoe.

The rest have that Ford Explorer minivan or the Dodge Charger. Occasionally I see a Taurus or Caprice, but those are rare these days (and seem perfectly adequate).

In EBR I see way more Chargers and Impalas. LP has a stupid number of Tahoes.

Sandy Springs is mostly immune to this trend. I've seen more older Crown Vic SSPD cruisers than SUVs, and I think that speaks highly of the city's commitment to responsible spending.

Livingston needs large SUVs to transport the large quantities of Meth they find in every house.

Good luck finding examples of when government has spent someone else's money efficiently.

I'm not even concerned about that aspect. How is it a beneficial tool for the departments over a much faster and nimble Charger?

the prefer the extra cargo space of an SUV. duty bags, long guns, traffic cones, spike strips, K-9s etc. plus the elevated position gives them added visibility, faster to get in and out of, and easier to jump curbs. also more effective at utilizing a PIT maneuver.

speed in police vehicles is overrated. theres an old saying, "you may outrun the cop, but you cant outrun motorola".

There are more and more and it is partially due to the amount of crap a LEO has to carry on patrol. You would be shocked to inventory a typical patrol vehicle.

LSP officer I know once said, “Suspects can never run faster than the radio.”

yeah I thought of that but the radio has always been around. I think it's more to do with them not wanting to chase fleeing suspects anymore with the way technology is these days and being able to track them with other means.
