re: What parts of Houston should I avoid?

Can we stop saying The Woodlands and Houston in the same thread. It takes 2 hours to get there on a Friday from central Houston.
Look. as a resident of The Woodlands, I agree it's dumb to suggest for a trip to Houston. There's too much you can do in Houston proper (museums, restaurants, shopping, etc.) But you are talking about bad traffic timing. I drove from TW to Hobby Airport yesterday in under an hour. It isn't that bad if there's a major attraction such as a concert you are looking to go to. Now if you drink at a concert that ends at 11, then yeah, I'd get a hotel too.

At first I thought you were looking for traffic advice to drive through Houston, I was going to say jump on the outer upper loop ,Texas 99, and avoid downtown and the city all together, but just get ready for a toll bill and do it on a full tank of gas since you will be driving about 100 miles.

I’d steer clear of the 5th Ward. That’s Geto Boys territory.

We just returned from Houston for the holidays, spent a week there to visit family. I hadn't been there in 18 years and was amazed at several things:
1) it is a huge city compared to where I live
2) people drive like crazy on the highways, you're going 75 and cars will still flash you by
3) went to the Galleria & Discovery park and felt I was in Mexico
4) restaurants are great, food is great
I didn't feel unsafe in any parts, just don't make it obvious that you are a tourist.

Antoine Blvd. is not a fantastic place to hang out after dark.

So, Houston is > Denham Springs? To each his own I suppose. Lafayette, maybe. But Houston?

Is that a serious question?

Nobie's is my favorite restaurant in town.

Dunno. I live less than 10 miles north of Hobby in central Houston and it takes me 40 minutes from the airport to my house. If you are getting to the Woodlands in under an hour it’s at 2 am with a police escort

My wife and teenage son took his brand new Civic to Rice for a one day seminar. They stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott in that area for one night. Some bastard stole all the wheels and tires off of his car and left it on blocks so there’s that. This was in May.

Was it just as bad in Houston before Katrina?

Nope. Wasn’t “good though”. A lot of the major problems right now could be fixed fairly easily if we didn’t have Soros trying to increase crime in the city. (Which he’s done quite successfully.)
