My brother lives in Austin. It's a nice city but damn near communist. I think I'd have to bail for the burbs but I'm in my 40s and married with kids and don't really care to live in a big city at this point.

The Texas hate on this board is eerily similar to the UL penis envy of LSU.
It used to annoy me when I'd here Texans talk about how great Texas is...Until I spent some time in several parts of the state. It is a paradise compared to LA outside of Cajun culture. The state has something for everybody. It has awesome roads, good schools, nice people, and other great qualities. Now, I get why they are very proud. I love LA, but it has serious flaws.

Austin really isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be. I’m here after a stint in Houston, drive a 4x4, ride a fatty mountain bike, and not only work in O&G, but work 100% in fracing. The entire city should hate me, but my dog and I get by just fine.

Austin is super liberal, but it's not quite Cali liberal. There are still lots of conservative roots just from TX culture, but I fear that is being replaced by Cali transplants.

Texas is a pretty good state. It does have a few problems.
1) Austin is a sewer of liberal group think and is truly one of the most intolerant places I've ever seen. You can do and say anything you like, so long as it fits their script. They are bigots and don't even realize it. Dangerous combination.
2) Houston and Dallas are not resisting Austin so it's affecting all of east Texas.
3) The people in Dallas can't figure out how to finish highway construction that seems to get worse every time I drive through there.
West Texas still feels like Texas to me, except for El Paso which is a mix of Mexico and Texas due to the border being so close.
I have very little experience in Deep South Texas. I'm sure it's similar to El Paso because of proximity to Mexico.
