Not so much in barrow but in most of the villages food is obtained by hunting and fishing, berry picking.

Poverty level in Barrow is well below the national average, Poverty rate in Barrow is less than half of the poverty rate in Texas.

So true. And they sit on their arse most of the year, and call it hard work. Complain about the cold.

Interesting factoid.

Watched Barrow's high school football team play in Palmer, AK last year during State playoffs.

Most of the team were Samoans, the smallest ones were the Inupiaq natives.

Surprising amount of peoples of Polynesian descent in Barrow as many of there parents work on the North Slope

yep.

And people complaining about the cold just don't get it.

It's crazy how fast you adjust to the winter temperatures when you are up here.

32 degrees during the winter is amazing...It's usually a dry cold so not too bad.

People in Louisiana get the wet cold a lot, which is miserable.

Give me below zero and dry over below 40 and wet anyday.

Yep.

Unfortunately we can get the Rain, wind and 40 degrees in winter. I'd prefer the colder temps and no wind

I don’t want to have to adjust to anything. I’ll adjust my latitude to where I’m comfortable

all the other small schools that have football teams.

Game I watched last year was Barrow Whalers vs. Homer Mariners (Homer is on the bottom of the Kenai peninsula)

If no one has mentioned the mosquitoes, theyre as big as dragonflies. The deer flies can be like a plague sometimes.

They play all over the State. One of the benefits of HS sports in AK. It's only an 8 game schedule though

Juneau Douglas HS used to have the highest HS travel budget in the country. Road games are 500 miles away.
