also close your eyes as you pull the trigger in darkness. Muzzle flash will blind you temporarily.

10-4. Mossberg feels cheap in hand IMO. Their bolt guns, too. Several other brands do, too, however
Ha, fair enough. I've never handled a 500 but my 590 feels like a tank.

Benelli’s are awesome, but quite expensive. I couldn’t afford one.

Bounty hunter friend uses a sawed-off double barrel. Says nothing intimidates better. But, come to think of it, he's the one doing the invading. Oh well.

A better solution is an AR15, and again just keep it simple. Buy an off the shelf rifle from either Daniel Defense or BCM. Either a 14.5" with a pinned and welded muzzle device, or a 16". Load up with regular 55 gr ball, and bring it to the range until you're very comfortable with the operation of the weapon.
A long gun as a home defense weapon, as in inside the home, is fricking retarded.

It's a meme perpetrated by AR weenies.
I think people should own whatever rifle they want (I do), but the AR weenies do tend to make the rest of us look bad.

If you’re dead set on a shotgun then also consider a good quality semi-automatic in 20 gauge...especially if you are a novice.
— untrained homeowners often get flustered and forget to pump a round into the chamber or use improper techniques that wind up with a jammed second shot. A semi-auto solves this problem but can also result in an unexpected, unaimed shot.
— a 20 gauge is lighter, easier to wield and has less recoil but is just as deadly up close.
— No. 6 shot will frick up someone real bad and definitely get their attention. If you want more, then No. 4 shot will do nicely. Buckshot in the home is not advised. If you need to shoot further, then use your shotgun to fight your way to your AR-15.
— 9mm handgun is a good option but be sure you know how to use it. Pistols are highly inaccurate in untrained hands.

It’s the funniest shite ever. A rifle designed to put a ton of rounds down range as fast as possible is suited for home defense.
I have a shite ton of ARs but they aren’t for inside my fricking house

Mossberg 500. Very versatile and you can change the barrel, grip, to fit your needs. Relatively inexpensive and been around forever.

For anyone who wants an EXCELLENT video about overpenetration and passing through walls, this is for you. Paul Harrell doesn't just spout what he thinks. He builds walls, builds meat targets to simulate people, and actually shoots it all with different calibers and weapons to see what happens.
Paul Harrell builds walls then shoots them.

I use a Colt 45 for home defense. If you need a gun inside your house it's probably going to be at very close range. I don't think I'd ever need a shotgun or AR for this.

Think about the mess. I have an 870 20 gauge under the bed for cocking but keep a couple glocks strategically placed.

OP, you mentioned you’re familiar with a shotgun from hunting before, so I’ll recommend the Mossberg 500 field/security combo. It’s basically two guns in one since you get a short (18.5”) barrel for home defense and a field length (28”) barrel. Could fulfill your need for a home defense arm while also providing the ability to bring your own gun on a hunting trip, sporting clay shoot, etc. if such a need ever arises.

I can't think of a shot in my house that would be over 20 feet. I'm fine with a pistol but hope I never need it.
I have long guns but keeping a pistol in a biometric safe next to the bed makes the most sense for me.
I have a kid that I'm 99.9% sure wouldn't touch a gun I left laying around. Her friends? I can't say for sure.
