What is your opinion on people who cage their dogs while at work?

I'll be the first to admit I don't know crap about animals. But I've noticed lately that a few people I know leave their animals in a cage in the house from about 7am til 5 or 6 pm when they get home from work.
That just doesn't seem right to me. What kind of existence is it to sit in a little cage for 10 hours a day, every day? If I were a dog, I'd be pretty pissed.
Thoughts?

I used to leave mine, as a puppy, in her kennel all day while at work so she didn't tear shite up. now I just leave her out and her kennel door open.
She still sleeps in her kennel all day long while I'm gone. Everyday when I get home, she is in her kennel. she loves it, its her little house

Well feel free to pass judgement then.
There's this nifty thing called training your animal, and it involves a crate.

Depends on the dog. I only leave my Weimeraner crated if it's storming outside, but the wienie dog is completely content in his cage. If I left him outside he would sit at the door and whine to get inside the entire time. He stays in his cage even when it's open.
And crate training is pretty normal these days.

My dogs love their kennels. I just shake their treat bag when I'm about to leave and they run in there.

they surely aren't meant to be stuck in cages for 8 hrs a day, pretty simple
i leave mine out and take him and walk him during my lunch break and run his butt when i get home

Depends. How old are the dogs? Are they housebroken? I crated my pup for several years while I was a work. The crate was the safest place for her and my apt. As she got older, I left her out of the crate.
She was a happy and healthy pup for 15 years.

Yeah it's pretty shitty if you leave them caged for the entire workday, especially if you don't work simply 9-5.
But, plenty of dogs love their crates, and don't mind at all being crated for a few hours a day. Most people I know eventually let the dog roam (and the dog will often stay in the kennel most of the time), but the training is good.
My dog is a rescue so he was having none of that shite, so he roams. He's a good boy though, so it's no problem.

I leave my two in their kennels while I'm at work and haven't had a single problem. Good thing you don't know shite about dogs.

Our lab isn't kenneled...he has full access to house and has doggie door access outside. Never had an accident(unless he was sick).
Our pug...different story. He will poop and pee inside just to piss us off. He is kenneled now whenever we leave or go to bed. But he likes it. I just say "go to your room Butters" and he runs and lays down in his kennel. I notice he will run there whenever he's scared as well(ex:when I'm vacuuming). It's his "safe place"

Mine just roam around the house while I'm gone. Y'all can't do that?
Posted on 6/19/15 at 11:02 am to indytiger
Those people shouldn't own a dog. That's a crime to have an animal caged for 8 plus hours.

I have two dogs that stay in the kennel from 7-3 week days. Every morning as we are getting dressed they are in there before being told. All I have to do is close the door.

Yep. They both run in theirs whenever they don't want to be bothered. Sometimes they even stay in the big one together. We tried doing the free roam thing, this just works better.

Ditto.
I crate trained as a small puppy, then graduated to fencing him in the washroom, then at about 6 months he had free reign of the house.
I've found that dogs that are crated all the time are the crazy energetic ones that seem neurotic about weird shite like weather and strangers.

Why can't you do both? Leave the crate door open?

Because then they would lay on the couches. I just moved into a new house and bought new furniture and I don't want them to frick shite up.
