This was the true Huey P. Funny how some don't like to remember him this way.
quote:

But his biographers note that the impeachment ordeal changed him. From then on he sought and exercised power for its own sake. He brazenly miscounted legislators' votes. He blackmailed and intimidated adversaries. He required construction contractors doing business with the state to kick back 20 percent of their fees to his political machine. He diverted wealth from Louisiana's oil resources to his allies. He had become "the first true dictator out of the soil of America," in the words of the journalist Hodding Carter. "Give me the militia," Long said, "and they can have all the laws they want."

I absolutely love it. Except the tire pressure warning light keeps coming on, and I had to go to dealership, they checked, and reset. It came back on a week later, I don't know how to reset.

Thanks for asking.

I love the history of Huey P Long, LSU, and the Tiger Marching Band.

I won't argue with all the experts on here about Huey Long. But I will say that none of us on here were alive during the Great Depression nor when the landed gentry and back room bosses in New Orleans were controlling the state.

It's easy to judge Huey looking back but if you go back and speak to many of your ancestors they'll tell you he did a lot of good for a lot of poor folks.

Again, I won't defend any of the corruption but I doubt his corruption was any worse than those who preceded him. He at least helped folks get an education, free text books, improved LSU to a real college, and many more things the poor and illiterate of our state would not have gotten until much later if at all.

I remember it fine. His opponents did the same damn thing. They started it by impeaching him.

I understand what you're saying. But I guess my point is, it's no different than now. The people that are benefiting the most from Obama's policies, those on government programs, will remember him the same way. "He did a lot of good for a lot of poor folks".

But if you talk to those ancestors that were on the receiving end of his taxation, kickbacks, and corruption, they probably wouldn't remember him so fondly.

He was a big time, liberal democrat that relied on the dependence of the poor to move his agenda. Many historians feel as though his corruption was deeper than his predecessors. But as long as he threw the poor people a bone and kept them just barely above water, and more importantly, dependent on government, he was beloved. Even though the State was going bankrupt.

Sound familiar?

I haven't read the whole thread, but my Grandma hated the Longs. CSB, but they brought Huey to the old OLOL across from the new state Capitol after he was shot. She was either in the room across the hall (or the same room, I can't remember) with her aunt when they hauled his arse in. She never came right out and said it, but I'm pretty sure she was happy he was gone.

By forcing them to kick back 20 percent to his political machine. And his political allies.
