Gotcha. Btw....I'm not judging anyone for having a gun. We don't have one in the house but my husband was a former police officer so I'm sure we will one day soon enough(not until I've been properly trained though...guns still terrify me). And it most certainly will have to be secured in a safe for me to feel ok with it being in the home when we do have a child.
At work, when we admit our kids, one of the questions we ask the parents is if they own a gun and how it's stored(just part of a bunch of safety questions we ask). From the accidental shootings I've seen(that didn't kill the child and they ended up a patient) I've learned to NEVER underestimate a child's curiosity.

6th floor condo with 24 hour security, no need for a gun. If someone does feel the need to climb through my windows, I have a Marucci in the closet.

Never underestimate kids though. 5 seems like the prime age to secure that gun better. Kids climb and are curious as hell at 5 years old. All he has to do is grab a chair and dig in drawers thinking he is looking for candy or something else and then come across that gun.
Looking in a drawer for a piece of candy and find a gun? If the child is 5 years old, they should be taught what guns are, how they are handled, that they should be respected and they should be exposed to shooting so as to witness the lethality and destruction they are capable of. They should be taught never to touch them and that if they want to shoot all they have to do is ask and they get a trip to the range.

Do any parents ever tell you that's absolutely none of your business?

I was squirrel hunting with a .410 at 5 and killed a deer at 6 with a rifle.
All kids should be exposed to guns, even if you don't have any. You never know what they might find at a friends house and you want them to know when they're in a situation they shouldn't be in. As a kid there's no way I dared out my hands on a gun without my dad's permission.

You can still teach them that. However, at 5 they don't always understand the finality of death. They still have magical thinking when it comes to stuff like that. And while you may have some children that will not touch it for the fear of getting in trouble....you can't completely expect a 5 year old to listen and grasp the seriousness. I mean...would you leave a 5 year alone on the sidewalk of a busy street and just say "Don't go into the road because a car will hit you and hurt you"?

No. They are all happy to answer the questions.

How is asking that question even relevant? I dont see what the hospital gains from this.

Basic safety questions. We ask if they have a pool and if they do if it's locked with a fence. Ask if child has a carseat, etc.
I guess we could use the info to notify CPS if we felt the child was in an unsafe environment.

Nothing in the nightstand now that I have a kid, but I keep a .22 pistol on a 6 ft armoire that I can get to pretty quick. Also have the 20ga fairly handy. The dog is my early warning system.

The case I said about CPS...I guess that would be an extreme case. But it's not like I've had a suspected abusive parent tell me "yeah I have machine guns loaded all over the house just sitting on the coffee table and right by our door"

My house looks like that scene in mr. And mrs. Smith where they start pulling guns out of ovens and microwaves...

How does a defense gun thread go 14 pages on the OT? This doesn't even happen on the OB
