He actually wrote it as a musical joke based on messing around with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. He threw those lyrics in just for the hell of it and has said in interviews never intended to release it originally. Then it just took off from there.
As a Fogelberg fan I didn't like it originally but it sort of grew on me.

I think I probably overreacted on that one. Donny at least gave us an original tune, and the animated version that was released on YouTube to celebrate its 50 year anniversary was kind of charming.
